Replacement gears for power window motor?

Well it only took 20 years, but I did lose a window motor to the infamous broken plastic gears.

Pulled out the window motor (88 Cougar, same as 88 Mark) and found the plastic stubs inside the nylon gear were gone. I tried the replacement gear from autozone (Dorman) but it was way too small for the casing...and says its only good for 1991 and newer.

Does anyone know the correct replacement gear, Dorman or otherwise?

I am not interested in replacing the plastic parts with metal hardware (even though that does work) nor am I thrilled about replacing the whole motor.

I purchased both a gear kit from advance auto and autozone.  The autozone one fit fine.. but the advance auto part was too big... maybe that is the one you need.

Thanks CougarSE, I need the bigger one.

I also heard that HELP! sells the replacement plastic pellets to go into the gears...that's what I need! I didn't see the pellets (or the correct gear) on the Dorman website, but I'll check again.

I also tried using the plastic pellets in the smaller gear, it wouldn't work. They obviously have two different sized pellets too. :)

The pellets for the later models are Help! p/n 74410. Pack of 3 about 3" high and 2" wide. They worked fine in a 94 Mustang and are supposed to work in the Mark VIII but I haven't tried them yet.

Here's the link to the HELP! catalog (sure wish I'd found that years ago ) https://www.dormanproducts.com/catalog/motormite/mm24010alphaindex_bkup.htm  Look under Window Regulator Plugs. Both sizes of gears on that page too..

Gotta love sharing the info among both forums. Thanks.

I checked the window motor's "plugs" in the small gear and put them in my big gear. They are the same. So if that's all that's wrong (like me) you can get the plugs and be done with it.

You can also go to the hardware store and buy a piece of 7/16"" diameter nylon rod for about $1. Cut 3 pieces to the 7/16" required length (as I recall) and file off any burrs. I may not have the time for hardware store hunting, so I'll pick up the plugs from Dorman and slap the motor back together.

Ok, I'll probably get flamed for this again, but ONLY IF you have no small children that would play in the car with the key on!
Take the nylon gear out of the window motor and clean out all the plastic 'crumblies' out of it. When you place the plastic triangular piece into the plastic gear, on all three corners place three 7/16th's nuts flat to take up the gap. Reassemble and very cheaply and easily your window gears will be solid and never break again. The only part that could strip out now would be the round plastic gear where it mates with the worm gear, but the motor will probably go before that happens.
I'm the only one who uses my car so I could car less if the jam/breakaway feature is disabled. This "repair" may or may not work for you.
Just my 2 cents.

Way to go Mike,

As I was reading down the post's I couldnt wait to get to the end to reply as you did. That nut trick I learned almost 15 years ago from friends that did glass repair, I tried it once and like you claim it never failed again. I did recently buy a 'fix kit' off Ebay for that problem and when it arrived it was just 6 small cut pieces of a 7/16" nylon rod. I had to see what it was and 10Bux wasnt too much to spend just too see what they would send.

I figured it might be 6 small nut's :-)

Mike

Yeah, I was a little reluctant to post it again because of a  :flame:  on the safety of the repair, but it's low budget and works for me  :D  besides being rock solid reliable. Don't know if I would go so far as to post pics  :beatyoass: On second thought maybe with a disclaimer :hick:

I bought the 74410 plugs (if I have kids or pets, they'll thank me for not replacing with metal parts) and it worked fine on the large and small gear. Its the same plug for both sizes of gear.

Now to find a friggin snap-ring plier so I can put the  thing back together! :)
