85' Turbo Coupe That I Want - Have some Q's

Ok, so there's an 85 TC about 35 miles from my house with 53,000 miles on the clock.  The Original owner wants $900 for it, all original.  The only thing, is this thing is a total rust bucket.  there isn't a body panel without major rust issues, except the roof!

Well, it's been sitting with the for sale sign up for 3+ yrs at his house.  And I have no idea what to offer him.  I know $900 is way to much, but I don't want to feel like I'm low-balling him. I've thought about offering him $400 and see where it goes.

I want it just for the motor/suspension/interior.

The reason for that, is that my 87' 3.8L just blew the head gasket w/178,000 miles, and needs all new sensors.  Just before it started to go, it was rattling, so I don't want to replace the gasket.

90% of my driving is on the highway @ 75mph, so I want to get decent gas mileage.  Hence the 4cyl turbo.

But, I do have an 86' 3.8L out of a t-bird, but don't want another 3.8, unless, like CougarSE said, "I want to have another 5 speed 3.8 car that I've fully ported the heads and intake..  and a decent camshaft."

If you don't end up following this one up, you should let me know where it is. :D

I'd have to see it, but $400 doesn't seem that bad of an offer.

How many other people in his area are interested?  3 years huh?  I'd say none.

How much could he get from a junkyard for it?  $100 at most?

Go with $200.

you should offer him $500.  the motor and interior alone are worth that.

No one is interested, or don't know where it is, but it is right off of Hwy 151. A pretty busy highway.

Yea, but I think I'll probably offer him $300, and see where it goes.  I don't really want it to go more than $500, then I'll have to start borrowing it:mad:

The value of the whole thing sitting in someone's yard is not equal to the value of the removed parts.

well if it's been for sale for 3 years, go with that.  the worst that can happen is he wants more.

Don't tell him about your project.  Keep your reasons for buying it to yourself or if he asks, be very vague.  You don't want to seem like you "gotta have it."  Don't be eager for it.  Make a mental note what your max is and be ok to walk.  My sage car was only $200 and I still don't have $1000 in it, including the price and my Mark 7 was $550.  They are my two dailies and look and work great.

Start at $200 but I would walk at $350.  There is a bit of a premium I add in my head for close proximity - that's if these cars are rare in your area.  If not, stop at $300.

Yea, that's how I got this car now for $150.  Only thing it needed was a major tune up, and a brake booster, which I already had.

Definitely rare! Only the 3rd one I've ever seen around here.  And one was a wreck!

Yea, I've stopped once to look at it, and that was about 1.5 yrs ago, maybe he wants it gone.  Then I stopped around the 1st of the year, telling him that if he wanted any parts from my 86', that I had them.  He then told me that it was going by the end of this summer, but it;s still there.  So... I think I'll tell him $200, and see where it goes, and like you said, 300-350 and walk, he will definitely call me back.
