Major Issue Help August 11, 2007, 05:26:51 AM Ok Well I purchased my 87 about 3 weeks ago. And since getting it I have run into one problem after another. The 02 sensors were bypassed apparently to make the car run rich. This is obviously due to the fact that codes 41 and 91 are thrown since I now have the new 02's and everything hooked up. These codes say the car is running lean. Well now whether the car is in gear or not it idles crazy and keeps trying to stall. And many times it has stalled. It drives fine once you are going. A local shop recommended replacing plugs, wires, cap and rotor. So I am doing that tomorrow as well as replacing the coil just since I have one extra from an old project. What could cause the car to run lean like this? I have gotten suggestions ranging from fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel injectors. But before spending 1k on replacing the fuel system only to find it to not be the problem, I was wondering if you guys had any input. Also keep in mind the car only has just over 54k miles. Thanks. Major Issue Help Reply #1 – August 11, 2007, 05:43:31 AM TPS could be out of wack, fuel filter,... it could be alot of things. Start knocking out things like the tune up and take it step by step bro Quote Selected
Major Issue Help Reply #2 – August 11, 2007, 10:42:29 AM For starters clean the IAB... May not cure the codes but will probably help the idle issue... Wouldn't hurt to verify the TPS voltage, but assuming there are no related codes it's probably OK...IF it's not the MAP sensor(be sure the vac line to it is OK), then likely it's a fuel related issue... First off change the filter and run some injector cleaner through it...If that doesn't help, the fuel pressure should be checked at open throttle to be sure it is maintaining pressure...Tom Quote Selected

Major Issue Help Reply #7 – August 11, 2007, 04:01:43 PM Yeah sorry it is the 5.0 Non-HO. I am pretty irritated with this situation so I am forgetting stuff! What is the easiest way to check fuel pressure? Could the map sensor or tps be bad and not throw codes? Also the car occasionally throws code 21. Engine coolant temperature sensor out of range. Generally happens when the car is just started. But I cannot see how that would affect the fuel delivery. Especially since I only got the code twice out of about 20 tries. Quote Selected
Major Issue Help Reply #8 – August 12, 2007, 03:55:43 PM Ok so I am starting to think that since the car is running lean that is why the idle is crazy and why it keeps stalling. I was told by a friend of mine to replace the ACT (Air Charge Temperature) Senor. Could that even be a culprit? Quote Selected
Major Issue Help Reply #9 – August 12, 2007, 07:20:32 PM It's normal for the ECT to cause a code when the engine is cold... No ACT code, no problem... Check the vac line to the MAP... Sounds like a fuel delivery problem, see my first post... Quote Selected
Major Issue Help Reply #10 – August 12, 2007, 07:29:23 PM Yes, start with checking the vac line at the MAP, then a fuel filter. Do stuff that doesnt cost much, and may need to be done anyways. Quote Selected
