Where to connect power for amp? May 18, 2007, 08:43:31 AM I'm gonna run an amp to my subs in the back my friend gave me, but where should I connect it to get juice? I tried coming off the power to the stereo, but it drained it too much and shut it off...oops.:hick: I used to have the premium sound set up, so can I used one of the wires from the old harness going to that? I'm really new when it comes to wiring, so I need help. :D Quote Selected
Where to connect power for amp? Reply #1 – May 18, 2007, 09:29:31 AM you need to run a cable from the batery to the amp, a wire from the head unit to the amp to turn it on and off and a cable from the amp to chassis ground. walmart sells cheep amp install kits that have them although the cables arent realy all that big. i dont recall if they come with an in line fuse or not but you should use one of hose as well. ive never realy connected directly to the batt. i usually use an eye at the end of the cable and mount it to the power side of the selinoid. Where to connect power for amp? Reply #2 – May 18, 2007, 10:00:10 AM Don't use anything smaller than about 8 gauge wire either. Other wise you will end up buring up the wire. Quote Selected
Where to connect power for amp? Reply #3 – May 19, 2007, 06:14:20 PM Thanks for the help guys. I hooked up the remote wire from the stereo to the amp, grounded the amp to the chasis using the -, and then run the positive with an inline fuse from the battery. but for some reason whenever I turn up the stero passed "2," basically making it audible, the amp shuts off and you have to restart the stereo to get it to come on. Not sure why its doing that? Any thoughts? I thought maybe it wasn't grounded good enough, because all the wires are hooked up correctly and I'm using decent gauged wire to power it all. but would that even cause it to shut off and come back on when the stereo is turned off and then on again? Where to connect power for amp? Reply #4 – July 11, 2007, 10:27:58 AM well as long as the polarity is correct and none of the wires are touching each other you shouldnt have a problem. how is the amp itself mounted? it it screwed into the sheet metal? ive never had an issue with that but who knows.... did you realy se and clean the paint off where you grounded it? other than that if its not poping fuses i have no ideas. perhaps its a faulty amp or the speakers are too much for it or something?
