How much sounds reasonable to you guys for an ~80,000 (probably meant like 89000, but whatever) mile HO motor with ecu, mass air sensor, and accessories (I believe everything, from smog pump to a/c compressor)? Not sure of compression. My motor just blew a ring or something so I need a new motor now and this one's the first available locally.

Edit:
The banging/scratching noise which sounded like the entire engine was going to fall apart sounded fine when I tried starting it yesterday.  Before, it sounded much worse than a rod or knock, but not to the extent of piston on cylinder walls (not sure where compression tester is). Thought that it had to be a coincidence that I had an oil change on Saturday and when they came and showed me the dipstick, it looked perfect at the crosshatch, I didn't think that was the problem. Because it was a hot day, my only guess was they used some REALLY thin oil, instead of the 10w30, or my motor was toast. When actually digging around the engine to figure out what caused the problem yesterday, I found the oil over full. Drained FOUR quarts out before the oil was at the crosshatch with my own oil level readings. Needless to say, I don't think I can trust ANY place to change my oil anymore, but myself. It was Oil Can Henry's at their local HQ location. I'm thinking the guy didn't push the dipstick in all the way or something.

Its running fine again, but I'm not sure what damage its done internally. Probably ruined my valve seals even more. Either way, I still want a new motor. I'm still not sure why it sounded like one cylinder was completely toast, but I think its the same one thats been noisier for years.

Lesson learned. It may not usually be worth the time/money to change it yourself, but one mistake can be costly.

I have been watching for a while now and have seen incomplete (based on your list, like no ECU or Upper/Lower) starting at $400 with higher miles than you list.
The only ones I have seen with all you list (ECU to A/C) have been the whole car @ $1000+ (I believe last one I saw was 100K+ mile 89 stang $1300 obo)

i bought a whole wrecked car for $300... but i think i got lucky.... he originally wanted $700.....  so for a stock setup, i wouldn't think it should cost more than $1000... especially if the car doesn't run

Around here anything that says 5.0 Mustang on it is made of gold, so I'd be looking for a 91-93 T-Bird or Cougar engine (with the MN12's rusty rocker problems people give them away). That's around here, though - your mileage may vary wherever you are...

I paid 400 for my complete engine from a local JY with ~93000 miles complete minus the alternator. Even had the BBK headers

Foster Auto Parts (FAP)? Such a bad name for a company. Parents live just down the street from there, on the other side of Padden. As for the motor, nice price if its complete. There's a good chance its worn though, but never know. Either way, I can't pull it, have to use the dad's truck for hauling big things and he lives in Seattle. As far as he'll waste a day down here, is just towing me up, not spending a day to drive down, pull the motor, and drive back. I think the 80,000 mile $600 complete turn-key setup should be worth it, in Seattle - since I need the car (DD) running NOW with no problems. At least I should be able to pass emissions in January, for the first time in...ever.
