Cam questions....same but different....

My friend has an '86 Mustang GT.He just bought the same cam I did (we have a friendly cometition),a B-303.He has E-6 heads, ported, with a 3 angle valve job.I figure the cam will work good with my E-7 heads, but how will it work in a car with E-6 heads (modified)?I told him to pick up a set of E-7 pickup heads, but he says he can't for the time being, and he's going to use the E-6's for now.Can it still make good power to the ground? He has 3.08 gears,Cobra intake,MAC headers, and off road H-Pipe.

It'll be better than the stock cam with the same heads ( especially the mid range.. like when your cruisin' & then romp on it)BUThe won't see the same improvements at the top end since the heads are stifling the aspiration. My opinion- the E6s suk- should've been the 1st mod, especially from an assembly POV.Matter of fact, I wouldn't even take the time to tear down to do the cam swap until I had the heads E7s or better yet GT40s or Y303s.

I agree that E-6 heads are ,that's why I got E-7 heads and had them worked. But,he has what he has,and he has to put a cam in it anyway. He overheated the engine and is trying to get the car back on the road soon.Do you think that you'd lose power on the top end,or,just not live up to the cam's full potential?

Will that cam even work on an '86 block since it has flat top pistons?

I wonder that myself.I think that it will, but a PTV check will have to be done.

I had a B303 cam in my '86 Capri, everything else was stock.
No issues other than since it was not a Mass-Air car, it would usually stall right after cold start-up and require a re-start. It did have a nice lopy idle to it.

Mass Air will be added.Did your Capri have E-6 or E-7 heads?

It had E6AE heads on it, 1986 was the only year that they were used on Mustang's & Capri's.

Thanks.I'm trying to gather ALL of the info in every aspect of installing a B-303 cam into this engine with the parts he has available. What kind of performance did you experience?Anything other than stalling on cold starts? How was gas mileage?

The cold start issue never bothered me and since your friend’s car will have mass air, it will probably take care of it and help with any mileage issues that the larger cam may cause.
I owned that car for over 10 years but I never checked my gas mileage on it, it was strictly a toy.
I was happy with the way the car ran with the cam, I liked the more erratic idle and I had two friends with stock Mustang's, an '85 GT, and a '89 LX and the car seemed noticeably livelier than both of them.
JAMEZILLA described it well, in comparison to the '89 LX, it was stronger in the mid-range but on the top end I would say they weren’t much different. That could very well be because of the restrictive E6 heads.

I told him to get a pair of heads from a 5.0 pickup and call it good.Perhaps he will.E-6's are not performance heads by any means.I'm surprised they did as well as they did on the '86 models.

Just check the PTV clearance before he installs the E7 heads. If it works cool:evilgrin:

On my h.O (forged flat tops),my E-7's work great.Although from engine to engine it may be a little different.Thanks.

As long as the pistons has valve reliefs he should be ok. If not I'd check it.
