Garden tip FLOWER BEDS

so i was down in savahana ga a whle back and i noticed the hotel had pine needles in thier flower beds.

Nothing much grows under a pine tree so i get back home and start racking up needles onto a tarp.  Its unbelieveable how many pine needles you can rack up in just a few minutes.  Even when i cut pine logs on my saw mill, i notice the chickens roll in the dust and flick it under thier wings,  the dogs roll and bed in ti.

Im think,, hummm, nature is trying to say something here.  Terpentine ,, fleas,,, they must not like that and the animals know this.

Now for flowers and the beds, the wife was kinda worried about acide,,  i told her most of the acid is gone cause the needles are brown.  Ok she goes with it and since we added the pine needles, we dont really do much weeding, its hard for them to pop up and get a start.

Granted my wifes flower gardens might look like weed beds but dont mistake the herbs growing for weeds.

heres a few pics of our beds ,, so far, no weeding since the pine was layed.  Our beds have no liner, no plastic, no nothing but ground underneath.  We have tried everything in the mulch world and still this beats it all.  It really is a Labor intesive event to weed her flower beds cause they are actually out of control with respect to perinials.  We never really know what is going to pop up each year since we started them in 97.

see pics.........

I have the absolute best kind of garden: It was there when I bought the house :hick: and everything is perennial, so I don't have to replant every year. Gotta love no-maintenance (other than pulling a weed out here and there) :D

Pinestraw also breaks down and enriches the soil.
Here, north of Atlanta, pinestraw has to be replenished 3-4 times per year. As it turns out, I seem to be very allergic to the white powdery mould that pinestraw develops. Every time I work around it, I end up with flu-like symptoms for 3 days. So I am now using the colored cyprus bark as mulch. Only been down for 3 months in the oldest places, but seems like it will last at least a year.
My mom's new house required 220 commercial bales of pinestraw, so we are trying to find a "cheaper", less labor intensive  solution....
