You know Sportsman classes are getting the axe! They'll probably subcontract out the chassis/safety certifications too :( We may be looking to the IHRA or some other organization for legality soon. Man this sucks!

It's a good thing I had already planned on letting my NHRA membership expire in July. Last month I decided not to send any more money to NHRA after 28 years of membership.

Open letter to the Sportsman racing community

On Wednesday, NHRA and HD Partners Acquisition Corporation (HD Partners) announced a definitive agreement under which HD Partners will acquire all of NHRA's Professional racing assets, including the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Upon closing of the transaction, the acquired assets will be held in a wholly-owned subsidiary of HD Partners named NHRA Pro Racing.

The announcement stated that NHRA will retain all its non-professional racing, which includes the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, NHRA Summit Racing Series, NHRA O'Reilly Auto Parts Jr. Drag Racing League, and the AAA Street Legal Drags.

Importantly, NHRA will be the sanctioning body for all NHRA racing activities, including the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series and continue to offer its membership program, publish its weekly publication National DRAGSTER and continue its youth and education programs.

This new relationship ensures, through a long-term agreement, that all the unique attributes of the sport remain intact including Sportsman racing at NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national events. The initial term of the agreement is 25 years.

Everyone understands that the foundation of our sport is based on Sportsman racing, and NHRA and HD Partners recognize the significance of ensuring that Sportsman racing at NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series events continue.

We encourage the Sportsman racing community to talk to their Division Directors or other NHRA personnel if they have further questions on the announcement. Further, we encourage Sportsman racers to send emails to nhra@nhra.com, and we will be happy to answer your questions.

So I, like thousands of others, mis-interpreted the agreement. Even though NHRA did NOT sell the Sportsman series, they did agree on a 25 year contract to travel with the pro classes. Sounds like a much better deal. I'm still trying to figure out how they are going to run everything with no building and no employees though...

I read the article yesterday in my national dragster.

NHRA sold the 4 pro classes.( no big loss)

They still run the sportsman classes as normal.

My big question is how do you split the gate money and all that concession cash?

I want to know how they plan on running the Sportsman stuff with no headquarters. They sold their CA office and all 4 tracks they owned. So now NHRA has basically no assets. Just sounds fishy to me...

Whats the major difference for IHRA and NHRA? Don't they both race kinda the same stuff? I'm not real big on this, I only go and watch test and tune at the local track but really, is there that big a difference for them?

NHRA invented the sport basically. ALL drag racing safety laws come from the NHRA. They were SUPPOSED to be a NON-profit organization, which was obviously a lie.

Just a smaller version of the NHRA with different rules for classes (IHRA Pro Stocks are 800ci instead of 500ci, they have Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car as Pro classes, and Pro Mod, etc). There's a ton of "sanctioning bodies" out there for drag racing, they just all follow the NHRA's rules on safety. (Kinda like how the SCCA, NASA, etc follow the FIA's safety rules for road racing).

There's the NHRA, IHRA, AHRA, NMRA, NMCA, PRO/Edelbrock, etc, etc, etc.. they still ALL follow the NHRA on safety and basic "structure".
