22" Tires on an 87 Rear

I want to put 22' tires on the back of my 87 Cougar. I'm shooting for the pro touring look with 17's or 18's on the front. I already have custom springs that will lower the front 1.5" and the back 1" I'll go to mini tubbs if I have to. My question is can I narrow the rear axle 2" per side without having to move anything ?

no need to narrow, you are correct. but the style i ASSuME he is goin for leans toward very low offset rims in the rear; lots of dish/lip.

jus some rough measurements off my axle, at 1" per side you will loose the quad shocks if you have them. you MIGHT be able to eek out 2" before the control arm pickups on the axle. you might hafta cut them off, narrow the axle and put them back on in the proper locations to get a full 2" due to the small bearing ends.

if it were me, id find a set of fox length axles/brakes and stick to an 18/20 combo. the 22" rears will have very short sidewalls; too short for my taste.

this guy is runnin 315's on 10.5" wide wheels w/short axles AND a 5/16" spacer to keep it off the inside. so if you wanted to mini tub, you can run the short axles and even more dish than this w/o even narrowin the axle housing. you will probly need to move the shocks though on a mini tub job.

So you want a 22 foot tire on the back?  Wow let me know when you achieve that...

Do you want 22" ("<-sign for inches) tires or wheels?  You say tires, so you mean 22 inch tall tires?

Claude, in the subject matter above his post, he DID use the correct symbol.....I think the man is just getting the 2 confused as he bounced back and forth between the two.  As for the rims/tires thing I'll assume rims as the stock tire height is more than 22":hick:

Just follow Gumby's post.  It has good info.  And welcome to the board.

I love all of the comments, but absolutely no help other than Gumby.

You can fit a 22" wheel, considering the factory tire diameter is 25.5" or so. The only downfall is you dont get much sidewall. Id personally recommend running a 20" at the largest.

Youll most likely need to mini-tub it, and roll the fender lips, but its definatly possible.

And for those who dont understand the look he's trying to achieve, heres a few examples:

It's Gumby's fault.

So I'm running 10.5 inch wide and 28 inch tall tires (or 275-60-15) on my T-bird and it works fine.  So a 22 inch wheel with 3 inch tall tires (if possible) should also work.  But my car is not lowered.

The best way I found to roll the lip is to buy a air nailer and use the hammer head that comes with it.  It will just hammer away as you move it on the inside lip and roll it right back.  You can buy these from harbor freight and they are not costly.

When I get my new wheels on the 11th (10 inch wide with a 5.5 inch back space) I can let you know how this fits.  I have a Mustang width rear in mine that is about 1 inch narrower on both sides (total 2 inches).

I don't know how wide your Cougar rear is compared to my 87 Turbo coupe but I think they are the same.

If it is the same the best way to narrow it one inch per side is to get a rear out of a Fox Mustang.  The regular one is a 7.5 like your cougar has or you can switch to a Mustang GT and upgrade to a 8.8 with posi.

Good luck with your project and sorry for the bad comment, don't let anybody from letting you make your car exactly the way you want it.

How is that for better info Tbir232ci|?

Now we will see if the the person ever comes back on line to read the replys.

Have a great 4th.
