Carpet Removal

Well im trying to take my carpet out to remove the sound deadening and install subframe connectors. So my question is do i have to remove the dash to get the carpet out?

I do not beleive you will have to take the dash out for the carpet.  seats, lower door trim, and either loosinging or removing the interior plastic panels should allow the carpet to come up.. also you may have to disasymble the center consol if u have one.  the carpet should slide out from under the kick panels below the dash.

the only tough part i encountered when removing mine was the carpet under the dash. i ended up cutting it under the center of the dash to make it easier to remove. i cut it far enough under the center that it would never show when re-installed. i cant remember exactly what it was holding it in there but i think it was the mount/support for the center of the dash.

I have everything else out i just cant get it out from under the center of the dash where it comes down to the console.

I loosened my dash.takes about 5 minutes.Remove the three small bolts from under the two speaker grilles on the dash and the center cover as well on the dash.Two bolts from the lower outside of the dash where it bolts to the door jambs,and loosen the steering shaft.Directly above the steering column shaft,there's a 10mm nut.remove that as well.That will let the dash move enogh to easily remove the carpet and re-install the new carpet.I just did all of this a couple of weeks ago.I'm glad i took the time to loosen the dash.Now,the carpet is how the factory had it.I still need to re-install my console,but that's the easy part.loosening the dash isn't nearly as py as it appears.Remove 5 bolts,remove 4 nuts and loosen one but leave it on enough to hold up the column,that's it.Eric gave me that tip on the dash early this year when I swapped my heater core.I did the core swap in about 40 minutes.Awesome tip,Eric,wherever you are.LOL.

I cut mine too.

Ok to do this do i have to have the instrument cluster or the radio and stuff out? I have to put the seats back in because my other car is a POS and my wife has to work tomorrow morning at 7 so i want to pull the carpet before i put the seats back in but if i have to take that stuff out then i will just leave the carpet in I guess. Im not sure what you mean by "the center cover as well on the dash".

Well i figured out what you meant by the center cover on the dash. I never noticed that cover there before.:hick: But my other questions still stand.

I loosened the dash,as i stated,and lifted it a little while my wife pulled it out.I figured if I was going to all the trouble to change the carpet,I may as well do it right.What other questions "still styand"?Removing the sound deadener sucks,but,with a sharp ser and a hammer in some spots,it'll come out.

Is there bolts/nuts on the center section? I found the top 3 and the 2 in the door jambs but where are the 4 nuts? I understand the one above the steering column. Are there 3 for the column? I have a hard time trying to get under the dash cause Im kinda large so I am just trying to get an idea of where I should be looking for the nuts under the dash. I looked in my Haynes manual but they dont show anything for removing the dash.
I just cut my carpet to get it out, but when I put new carpet in or if i take a carpet from the JY I will loosen the dash.
On a side not is there a difference in the carpet between a console car and a consolette car? There is a nice car at the JY but it just has a consolette.

The carpet should be the same.If the car has the consolette,you'll have to cut the holes in it where the shifter and etc are.You can use your current carpet as a template.I'd buy new ,which I did,and it was well worth it.I think it was $114.00 to my door.The interior looks new.You don't have to disconnect the gauges or stereo.The 4 nuts are under the dash,and they hold the column up.Once the column is lowered,there's a 10mm nut directly above the steering column all by itself.Once those are loose,you can pull the dash a little.

To make it easier to remove the asphalt sound deadner, snag the wife's hair dryer and a good stiff putty knife or ser. Heat the sound deadner  and lift it up with the putty knife/ser. It took me about 3 hrs to remove all the sound deadner in my entire car doing it that way. Good luck and have fun :D

I did the passenger floorboard last night. I have a heat gun that i am going to use when i do the rest of it, but it came out very easily last night just sing with a small(1" putty knife is all i had) putty knife. It only took about half hour to do most of the passenger side.
