well i have the old stock 5.0 for now so im gonna keep the rear end and all but it does help that it might be a locking one. so i don't think its gonna break with 61000 on it well for now its gonna be somewhat stock but i whanna up the power a little and definatly fix the slipping tranny.

ok now idk if i have the"quad" shock set up or not. it kinda looks like a 4 link set up. but not the ones u see on offroad vehicles. kinda like the rear ends on the 87 88 cougars.  now does anyone have a pic of what the quad set up is?

It should look like you have 2 sets of shocks attached to the axle. One positioned vertically, and one horizontal (the quad shock).

All fox rears are four-link.  Quads would have shocks going horizontal, almost.  I don't even think quads were around in 1984.

The main shock would run from the axle up and mount in through the trunk, the quad shock would be horizontal from the axle to a mount beside the fuel tank on the frame rail (like has been said already) and I dont think it was used till '86 on tbirds/cougars though i could be wrong.

As far as your trac lock, my car would/will spin both rear tires on gravel, dirt, snow, most of the time (wont spin on pavement although I havnt tried hard due to the high probability of me gathering my tranny off the road and pushing my car home afterwards :wtf: ) but my car has an open diff, I dont know why it does this but it does, maybe because I dont have enough power to twist the diff :disappoin

For our cars the quad shocks were first used in 1983 on the Turbo Coupe. Since that model was a late run during the '83 model year (which itself was truncated significantly), it is assumed that from late 1983-on, all Cougar/T-Bird rear frame rails *should* have the holes to accept the quad shock brackets. I know for certain that my old '84 did. The first Cougar to have them from the factory would be the '84 XR7.

This thread got me wondering just what kinda rear end I have in my XR-7 so i went outside and checked the code on the door, and it read "R" which is 3.45 Locking according to the COOL CATS site.. when I scrolled down on the page the information about the XR7's said that they had the 3.08 gears. Eric, waddup with that? Is that a type-o on your end or was this another thing they changed when they imported it to Canada?

This is called "one hand not talking to the other"...most rear axle information from our era is convoluted at best. It makes more sense that a 4-cyl. turbo car would have a higher gear ratio. I think 3.08 were standard but most people opted for the taller gear. Either that, or the info was wrong from the start. The axle code on the door tag will always be more correct.

Perhaps it's beacuse your car's a 5-speed, Alex.  Don't the manual tranny turbo cars get higher gears?  (i.e. 87-88 TC's are 3.55 Auto and 3.73 Stick?)

Open rear ends will spin both tires if the loading on each tire is equal while under power.

Well I just took a look at an XR-7 brochure I had, and on the back cover it has the It says the axle ratio is 3.45 for both the automatics and 5-speed.

The 7.5 diff. under my 87' is a trac-lok.I always have two wheel peel. Myaxle tag code is as follows: v493B  2L73 75 6L25
the "2L73" part means it's a 2.73 ratio locking diff. hence the "L"
and the "75" means the diff. size.
Got my info from my mustang technical refrence book.I highly recomend this book Even know we have thunderbirds, most of the info can be applied to our cars as well.
