turbo question.

how are people converting their 83-86 turbo coupes to 87-88 intercooled and getting their hoods to close flat?  I recently put installed a garret turbo from an earlier TC and my hood sticks up about an inch or so higher on the passenger side.  what can I do to make this fit better? I've rotated the housing about 45* to where the outlet is sticking straight up.  maybe I could cut alittle more off of the discharge tube to let the intercooler sit down better? or maybe trim the hose?  I dont want to start cutting things and end up with my daily driver not being able to be used.  didnt cougar crager do this mod?

Check the adjustment of everything?

I had to take the braket off the front of the intercooler to get the hood to close right.

Yeah, I went through this too. It took some creative stuff to make it work.
First of all, I don't even have the brackets for the intercooler; it's simply held by the couplers.
I decided to save my compressor housing and modify the charge tube instead. I cut it off about 2" up from the bottom  (just before the heat-sink fins begin) and grind it smooth.
The compressor housing obviously must be rotated now.
I found that in order not to disturb the wastegate position, the compressor housing must be rotated until the next pair of bolt holes line up again with the wastegate bracket.
I know that sounds confusing. In effect, this technique will place the output of the compressor housing at just below 9 'o clock.
Add this position with the extension of the charge tube and you have something to work with. While everything fits well, including the air boot on the hood ducting, the bottom coupler has a tough time sealing on that charge tube. It's simply too great of an angle for it.
I'm pretty sure that I have a boost leak there. Of course, I'm still running py hose clamps. I really need to buy some t-bolt clamps.
Here is a diagram I made for NATO in a similar thread.

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look at it and see what I can do.  I rotater the housing to the next set of holes and cut the tube about 2" up like you said. I'm not running an intercooler bracket maybe the intercooler isnt pushed down as far as it should be since I didnt install it myself. right now it looks like  with the way the hood is sitting.

be carefull not running the ic braket. I ran it for 2days with out the bracket when I let out after boosting it would blow the ic clean off the motor! sounds a lot like a motor gernading!lol! any way after poping the inercooler off three times in one day I put the bracket back on and never had the problem again. untill I shelled the turbo that is. now I run a t3 with a motorsport fmic so I will never have to mess with that pos topmount again.(well not on that car. my 87tc still has a topmount:()

I've been running without a bracket for about a year with no problems.  tighten your clamps and you'll be fine.

I've been running without that bracket since I've had the car. My hood wouldn't close and I wasn't going to force it. This is with a Garret t3/4 hybrid. With a Svo compressor housing. I took off the bracket and all was well. It might be sitting high with the way you did the output side off the turbo.Might try cutting down the output tube if you can. Most of the people I remeber grinding the  off the compressor housing. So you might look there. It would cost more but you could buy a different housing for it too.
