first, get/ borrow or buy a set of 40 over ring set.

simply place one compression ring in cyl 1 at the top and level it out with a piston.  Measure the gap you have with a feeler guage. Now skoot the ring down to the middle of the cyl and measure the end gap again,, skoot the ring down to the bottom or so and re-measure again.
take notes on all three measurements and repeat for the remaining 7 cylinders.
this will tell you how you stand as far as compression and balance of each cylinder.  Its a prime chance to get this info now since its easy to do.  This will tell you exactly how much above .040 and hopefully not below .040 you are and if you need sleeves or not.

Get us the casting number also,, its on the pass side lower rear  on the block,,4 place values such as "E0AE".
start pricing your .040 over pistons now, you'll be needing them, thats what i have now.

You gonna need a crank w/matched bearings.  Im guessing you know what plasti guage is so use it as soon as you can and determine your bearings actually do match the rods ect.

It would be nice if you could get your block line bored as well with reguard to the mains/rods. Broaching is what i think its called.  All they do is machine off the caps a little tiny bit then they reinstall the caps and punch a new hole right thru and this makes it a perfect circle again.  Same goes for the rods if you get a used set.  all this depends on your pocket but its apparent you got to get all the goodies.

usually a machine shop will stamp the rear intake to block surface with ".040" as standard procedure.  Check and see if thats been done.
