digital oil pressure question

does anyone know what the oil pressure range is on the digital gauges? for the sender and increments on the gauge? I want to keep my stock gauge working, but I have way more oil pressure than stock. Id like to make it work so my gauge still reads in the normal pressure level or at least isnt all lit up so I could see if it drops. thanks

as a part of the calibration test of the needle type guage in the 1987 shope manual / page number 33-36-1 , you can manipulate the needle type system.

Since the needle type guage and the digital type are wired to the same device,,,the oil sender unit, it would stand to reason you would likely get the same results if you do what they say.

They say to unplug the sendor and hook up one end of a 22ohm resistor to the wire and ground the other end of the resistor which gives you a high oil pres indication on the needle (should read the same with the digi also.

22ohms = high oil pres
73ohms =  low oil pres
0 ohms = direct short to the engine block is high or pegs out

rule of thumb here is when you increase resistance you are decreasing current flow to the cluster no matter what type it is.
the oil sender has its own reissitance so i would simply go to raido shack and purchase a variable resistor of some sorts and install it in line with the wire going to the sendor and away from the bulk of heat in the bay.

i would then get my meter and dial it to zero ohms

Once i installed the variable resistor, i would just start up the car like normal and note the oil pres as it is now (which you say is pegged out).

I would then "dial in" or calibrate the cluster by increasing reisistance thus lowering current flow to the cluster and resulting in less bars being lit up.

i could not find anything in my manual that states what each bar represents in psi but blown306cougar told me that he had an oil pump once that was so high that the guage displays bars at the top and the bottom and none in the middle.

try this,, and im sure youll be happy.

for some reason they also call out to disconnnect the temp sensor / sendor while doing the calibration, i did not read up on that part but thats what they are saying to do.,,perhaps parallel circuits ect might interfer with what you do.,dono.

Ive been around,,just not much to say. The BF lost his job for 3 mos so I didnt have the internet again,,,but we had enough money saved to take a trip to pennsilviana to buy a new XR-7! NO RUST!!!! My priorities are a little off..I know. $400 bucks for the car, it was listed on cougarnuts :)  Now Were swaping everything from one car to the other and when its done Ill have a car Im not afraid to show you pictures of!!!
I never had the stock oil gauge hooked up in the other car, I just know I want to use the stock gauge in the new car to keep it clean,, I figured it would peg. 3 years later the 347 is running stronger than ever and it still has 80psi at idle!
