Rear defrost repair

I read this over at NATO and thought I'd share it here.

Like many of us have had problems with the rear window defoger tabs coming off the window I have found a terminal repair kit from Ford that appears to be a good fix.

Motorcraft numbers:

Terminal kit WT-56830 lists for about $21.00

Rear window defroster repair "silver Paint" PM-11 Lists for around $25.00

Related TSB 04-24-5

The Kit from Motorcraft has 3 terminal in it. The kit is for newer ford vehicles and the Tabs are wider that the original plugs on the exsisting wires. You will need to replace the terminal on your wires or trim the tab. The terminals have flux and low temp solder on one side and terperature paint on the other. After cleaning the window tab area place the tab on the window, hold with a pencil and heat it with a 100 watt (min) soldering gun. after the paint changes color turn off the gun and leave it in place. Hold it on there for several minuets and then remove. You can also paint it with motorcraft grid (silver) paint. to help improve the conductive of current.

I have tried the permatex kits several times with no luck. Godd for a day if you are lucky. The permatex glue does not conduct electricity when it has cured. All the current goes thru the "Gold" colored paint they give you (yes it actually has silver in it). This is not a great conductor so with high resistance you get heat. Heat in turn softens the epoxy and gravity does the rest.

I did mine tonight and I will be able to try it out when it gets cold again here in Washington. I did place the tab closer to the edge of the window. There is plenty of room to move the tab under the side trim where there should be plenty of good solder to place it on.

Give it a try and lets see if anyone in the cold climate areas can let us know how it hold up...

Hmm I have to try this. The one in my T-bird is like that. I'll see if it works.
