'87/'88 T-5's

I heard somewhere that these transmissions have a provision for a clutch cable? Is this true? I have an '87 (previously an A4LD) TC that I swapped an '85 T-5 into with the clutch cable setup, but it has 2 bad syncs so i'm looking to swap. The option of going to an '87 or '88 T-5 would widen my market, i would think. Thanks.

The bellhousing is what determines if you use a cable clutch or hydro setup.

all you'll need to do is swap the bellhousing for one from an '87 or '88.
The older ones, as you no doubt know, are cable, while 87-88 are hydraulic.
FWIW, I have an '88 T5, but not sure if I really wanna let it go...

I'm not sure I completely understand... What I'm getting from this is if I swap in an '87-'88 T-5 all I have to do is use an '87-'88 bellhousing and I can use my clutch cable set up... Is this correct?

No....the bellhousing is what determines if you use a cable or hydraulic clutch system. If you already have a cable clutch setup, just slap on another 4 cyl. T5 and all is fine. The T5 is the same reguardless of cable or hydraulic clutch system. The 87 and 88 TC T5's are the same WC T5 as the 85 and 86 version. I have an 86 in my Cougar and it as well has some bad syncs but I could use an 87 or 88 T5 with no mods.

Is it possible to get a 5.0 T5 with the hydraulic clutch?(later mustang or whatever)?

No such thing as a 5.0 with a hydraulic clutch.

Aren't all the T5's cable except for the 87-88 T/c's. All stangs have the cable setup. The only difference is the 4 banger tranny has a smaller input shaft where it meets the pilot bearing/bushing. Also the gearing in the turbo cars is different. hope that helps sum it up for you.

have you messed with any of the 5.0 trucks? they have a hydraulic throwout bearing.

The 4 cylinder tranny uses different gears, different input shaft, and are rated for less torque. The transmissions are the same for the turbo and non-turbo cars.

Graham: While the trucks may use a hydraulic 5-speed, it wouldnt work in a fox as far as i know. I dont think they used T5's or transmissions similar to the T5.

The transmissions used in 5.0 F-150's were the Mazda-sourced M5OD
and used a hydraulic activated clutch, at least from 87 up.
No manual tranny was ever an option on a 5.8 F-150.
The 3/4 and 1 ton trucks with 5.8, 460, and diesel engines used a ZF, whish is far stronger than any M5OD.
Not sure about Rangers, I would assume though that the last few years have had a HYD. clutch setup...

All Rangers had a hyd. clutch.
