If you have 3.73 rear gears you need to change the speedo driven gear. If you have a stock AOD you need a (black) 23 tooth speedo gear, if you have a mustang or Super Coupe AOD you need a (purple) 21 tooth gear. The reason is that the T-birds have a 8 tooth speedo drive gear where as the SC or Mustang AOD has a 7 tooth drive gear. The reason your friends mustang had to be "tuned" is because the trans is computer controlled and has to be adjusted for the rear gear change. You AOD dosen't have a computer so just change the speedo driven gear and you're good to go.

why does it say use with a 4:10 gear? or is that just a example?

Speedometer "Driven" Gear, 23-Teeth Black, for Ford Automatic Transmission.

Nylon 23-teeth black speedometer "driven" gear. Commonly used with 7-tooth speedometer "drive" gear and 4.10:1 rear axle ratio.

This is the gear located on the speedometer cable.
