trans and rear end. Reply #15 – October 02, 2006, 09:26:21 PM Oh, thats different. The two that I know of were behind some 302's with some bolt ons and they gave up the ghost pretty quick. If a T-5 was availible I would run it as the gear ratios are not a gappy but its all about the wallet and whats availible.Darren Quote Selected

Also 1989 8.8 axle shaft length is the same as the earlier (pre 1986) 7.5 is it not?Yes, IIRC that's what he is doing, just to get the car on the road. No, the axle HOUSINGS themselves are the same width, but the axles themselves are longer..... Reply #17 – October 03, 2006, 05:12:14 PM yes i am putting the n/a 2.3 in the 84 mercury cougar with the srod trans and putting the 7.5 inch open diff 3.73 gears from the 89 mustang in the cougar also. another thing that popped into my head that isnt really related to this specific situation but related to axles is that i see 31 spline axles for upgraded replacement axles. wouldnt my 7.5 inch open be 28 spline? also same goes for stock 8.8s? i just wonder how if its stock 28 spline how can u put a 31 spline axle in it without modifying or changing something else? trans and rear end. Reply #18 – October 04, 2006, 10:34:32 AM Both rears came with 28 spline axles. To upgrade to 31 spline you'd need a center differential that accepts 31 spline axles as well. Most 8.8" rear equipped Ford trucks from the late '80's and early '90's had this. Quote Selected
