Just came across an interesting weather fact (Oldraven, you might like this)

I was just looking at Environment Canada's "Top 10 weather stories of 2004" website and it would appear that the blizzard of last February set a world record. It made Halifax the snowiest moderately sized city in the world. Never before has the amount of snow that fell (38" in less than 24 hours) ever fallen on a major city (over 300,000 people) anywhere in the world. Not even Buffalo, Fargo or Boise can claim 38" in less than 24 hours (those cities are specifically mentioned in the article). It also packed sustained winds of 124km/hr (75 MPH) and had a central pressure drop of 57 mb over 42 hours, making it one of the most powerful "weather bombs" ever recorded.  I guess our local name for it (White Juan, named after the hurricane that slammed us only five months previous) was appropriate. The only reason it was not called a hurricane was that it did not have an eye or rotation.

And we have the dubious distinction of being on that list twice. Both times for snow - White Juan and the  autumn '04 snowfall that saw 62cm (25") of snow fall on Nov 13th, the earliest major snowstorm ever recorded for Nova Scotia and the most snow from a single storm before February. That storm was accompanied by 50MPH winds. That particular storm left me without electricity for three days (even longer than hurricane Juan, which left me in the dark for two days)

And just two days ago we were hit with another 60+ cm (24") of snow that was whipped around by 112km/hr (70MPH) winds. The weather gods are mad at us, it would seem.

That sounds like the Blizzard of '77 they had in Buffalo, although I was not alive I have seen pictures, and have heard stories of many many people trapped because of the massive amounts of snow and wind we had. I always find it funny when a place that isnt used to snow gets only 1 inch and everyone gets in accidents and everything is shut down. I guess i will never know that feelings since i have lived in buffalo all my life.

38" in a day? That is pretty wild.

What's that about global warming? Yeah, I thought so.

It seems the winters back home have been extremely bad for the past five years. I know the two I spent in Dartmouth got us a lot of snow, and every year since we moved out here I get stories about the massive dumps. Where were these storms when I was in high school, and in dire need of many, many snow days. :brick:

1986tbird, that's funny. My parents lose power days at a time about four times a year from storms, but when Toronto or New York lose power for twelve hours, it's a celebrated victory that they didn't kill each other in the streets.

They actually mentioned that in the article too:

"When Toronto washiznit with its so-called "storm of the century" it called in the army, but hardy Maritimers organized neighbourhood work parties to dig themselves out."

Kinda like the hurricane parties people had during Juan...

I was just reading a similar story on mywinnipeg.com and remembered this post.  Out of the ten stories listed as the most sever Manitoba acutally had three.  (they are not as severe as the ones in NS, but interesting non-the-less)

1.  The year WITHOUT a summer (we had like one day over 80* in august and sept)
2.  May 11 blizzard with a couple feet of snow (closing highways for three days)
3.  Mid august frost, killing all the crops.
