The whole thing (housing and all) or just the gears and diff carrier?

If it's the whole thing it's physically intensive (due to the sheer size and weight of the rear end) but doesn't require much skill.

If it's the gears and guts it's a very delicate job that requires special tools (dial indicators, inch-pound torque wrench, etc) and the knowledge to use them. You have to set clearances by using shims, bearing preload by crushing a "crush collar", etc. You'd be best leaving that job to an expert.

BTW, if you only got the gears and carrier, you DID get the pinion gear too, didn't you? The ring and pinion are matched sets

$500-$1,000 to install. Have someone install it if you don't know how to do it.

Nope had 'em installed. They were done by a race diff builder. The $800 I paid was worth it:cool:

I'm a mechanic by trade, so I've done many (mostly in trucks, though - being a GM tech, and with GM's lack of RWD cars, there weren't many car rear ends to work on). Didn't do 'em in my own car, though - I am just gonna swap an entire TC rear that's sitting on jackstands in my garage in after rebuilding the t-lock

Those rings would probably be shims. You may or may not be able to re-use them - they are there to provide proper tooth engagement by shimming the diff case left or right to align it better with the pinion. Since every rear end housing is different you'll need shims to make it right in yours.

According to Mitchell Estimator it's a 4.4 hour job to replace the ring & pinion. If you go to a flat rate shop they should charge you pretty close to that...

I used to live in Federal Way and I can whole heartedly recomend Randys Ring and Pinion up in Everett. They installed the new clutch pack in my differential for $80. I think they'll do gears for around $350 but it's been 3 or 4 years. They are good though. My diff is still going strong.

Heheh, just dont go during rush hour(s). I used to work at the Boeing plant up there and could make the drive in less that an an 1 hr 15 if I cheated and used the HOV lanes in certain key places.

I'd give em a call. I hear setting up a rear end is no picnic.

yeah, if not done right your new rear end gears will destroy themselves.  I went through 5 junkyard sets because i just threw them in there.  I suppose if you look up the specifics you could do it though.  All you really need is a magnetic dial indicator and some carbon paper/lipstick.  Make sure you replace the crush sleeve on the pinion and such.  Just the specifics that is.

I got it! You could take the ferry from Burien to Southworth, then haul ass up to Port Townsend (stay the night in a bed n breakfast) then take the ferry to Whidbey Island and then drive down to Clinton and and take the ferry across to Mukilteo and then you're practically there.... Simple!
