Clunks While Shifting, and Grinding too!!!

Well, recent happenings have made me curious about the car. While driving around town, I've been noticing a grinding noise (and I can slightly feel it) while coasting to stops. It happens when breaking from time to time as well. I checked all 4 breaks today and they were all good. Also tested for bad wheel bearings and they were all good as well. No major swaying.

But this wasn't the only problem. I had been noticing while the engine went from 1st to 2nd gear, it has been making a thumping noise and jerks forward. I thought tranmission maybe was going south, but checked the fluid and it was fine. And it doesn't slip in any gears either, just the thump and jerk when going from 1st to 2nd.

So, I popped the hood and got a friend to power break the engine for me. Sure enough the engine jumped like a bronco. The Driver's side motor mount is broken, and the only thing keeping the engine from smacking my hood is the ingenious little Metal bracket ford devised for just this problem.

So 2 part question. Being that the motor mount is broken, could that be the thud I keep feeling everytime the car shifts from 1st to 2nd (assuming it's the engine falling down with lowering of rpms) and how hard is it to change the driver's side mount?

Engines got gears now? :screwy:  :giggle:

Seriously, it could very well be the mounts.

Actually, changing mounts isn't that bad, if you have a jack, and a small block of wood, so ya don't punch a hole in the oil pan.
After the motor mount is replaced, check your u-joints, too.
