Is there an advantage to an open element air cleaner?

Over the stock type I mean?  I know the stock air cleaner draws air from outside and cooler is better but on the other hand an open element air cleaner will take in much more volume.  They seem alot more popular too, Summit has like a million varieties so just which type is better?

The whole idea behind the open element is the flow aspect. The factory stye air box/cleaner are restrictive. The idea is to remove the restriction so you get more air eazier. Also makes the motor louder than with the factory setup.
