so i took my bird out for the first ride since the rebuild it was great to be back in the ol bird i took it out with no header panel and no alternator and i found a few problems and a few surprises
problem number one the starter makes noises when cranking it over and stays stuck for a bit when motor starts problem number two it smokes number three it is running super rich and bogs it real bad under 3000 rpm
surprise number one shiznit load of topend power number two it shifts perfect fast positve shifts (chirps em) and three subframes really make a diffrenc
jsut thought i would let every one know whats going on and as soon as i get my running the way it should i got a race with a chevy nova with an aluminum headed 350 i saw him run at the track he his best was a 12.9 and i think i can take him so i set up the race
geeze....good luck with that. what are your mods?
306
ported stock heads studs guid plates
blue racer valve springs better valves
1.7 roller rockers
torker2 intake
edelbrock 600 cfm
110gph fuel pump mech.
3/8 in. fuel line
keith black 281 pistons
arp head main and rod bolts
comp cams 512 lift 280 duration 110 seperation
c4 with shift kit
mini starter

3.73 gears with locker
26in tires 295/50
sub frame connectors
weight reduction no insulation in the carpet no a/c equipment no carpet in trunk
batt relocation
cut off switch in my bumper
hopefully by the time i race him i can find a good deal on some heads but i thinks thats all my mods
you think he will be a problem i think it will be one hell of a race but i should take him but stranger things have happened
well, i realy dont know what kind of power your mods are worth but i can guess to myself and based on the edjamacated guess, id think he would wipe the floor with you at the track. i dont realy know though, so do it up!
well the car feels strong but it needs a tune badly so i am hoping with a good tune it will wake it up a lil more kinda like you said just got to see what happens
throw that edel in the trash, and buy a demon!
that is the plan but no cash for that right now so please refrain from inappropriate name calling of inadequate parts ha ha just kidding man yeah it as but its all i gots for now actaully what do you guys think i should buy first i am having trouble deciding
nitrous kit
heads
carb.
1. carb
2. 200hp plate kit
3. bailing wire ;)
i dont know about that 200hp prolly send my rods flying but that would be nice
I'd say go alluminum heads ;) and switch over to a 650 double pumper like my set up... and get the expensive pushrods!
i do want a double pumper
i am leaning towards world jr. heads iron my buddy got a set of aluminum heads for 500 bucks bare and they woke his car up they were procomps off ebay but they fit almost flawless all he did was use 1.7 rockers but i am skeptical so i think i will stick to the world heads
oh yeah why were your pushrods so expensive
and whats the deal with the gm dizzy
What he said.
To get into the 12s you will probably need some better heads and a carb. Also you didnt say what exhaust/headers you were running. Although I dont know much about carb and intake setups.
oh yeah i for got about that there 1 5\8 primarys and 3" collectors from the collector there is about 6 inch of pipe till my dual flowmaster 40 series and cut offs right there
For 12's you're gonna need heads. Looks like you have enough cam. The carb? Not too well versed in them. I can tune one, but I don't have too much experience with aftermarket ones.
you guys are making me second guess taking this nova on maybe i should hold it off till i get better heads or "the juice"
and the reason i say i could go 12.9 is cause my unlce has a 68' fastback with stock heads, lower compression and old offenhouser dual plane intake,540lift 290dur and 554lift 300dur on a 351 stroked to 396 his should be good for 370 at the fly with a c6 wich takes a lil more power to turn i understand
and mine with higher compression and an torqur 2 single plane intake,544lift 280 dur both sides and c4 tranny on a 306 should be good for 355 at the fly
well i hoping any ways sometimes i dont even know what i am taking about ha ha
but you guys are right i still need more power
The cam you have with a 306 will actually make it good for more top end power. The same cam in a 351 will actually generate it's best performance lower in the rpm range. The peak HP will not tell the whole tale. What is needed for best quarter mile results is good average HP and torque numbers accross the boards. That stroker 396 with 540 lift and 290 duration most likely has loads of torque and great midrange even with the stock heads due to the fact the cam makes power earlier due to the cubic inch difference.
To take full advantage of your cam with 306 cubes, I would recommend higher flowing heads. Your convertor and gears should be good.
just trying to give my self some hope i dont know if i should get gt40p heads or world jr. but i know i need em to get the potential from the engine
If you can swing it go with the world jr's
Ive got windsor jr's, and I'll be honest, Id just put the money to some good alum heads. You can pick up a used set for pretty cheap now and theyre worth every penny. The reason I went with the windsor jr is because I got a killer deal on them when I worked at the machine shop, then used my own spring/valve setup and milled them down to 54cc chambers to up compression. But, they are miles behind the competition in port design and flow numbers.
well i will just have to see what deals come up but for now i got some good news i have figured the main bugs out in the t bird i thought it was carb problems the hole time turns out it wasnt it was the dam duraspark box that was jacking everything around so i got a hole new ignition setup on its way i will let you guys know how it go's when i put it in
that offy your family member has, they are nice pieces even though they are old.
I would say the heads are restricting your cam just like these guys said. depends on how much your stock ones are ported.
either way, with that cam, shift late and keep the revs up.
ha ha thats the plan for now i like to hear that lil 306 screem any ways
ok every one i got my distributor put in and installed it works a hell of a lot better then that dura it had it runs really strong above 3000 but under that there is no power what so ever
so i need some help with two things
1.my starter stays stuck after the engine starts any what causes that how do i fix it
2.what the hell do i a have to do to get some low end power the only thing i can think of is switch intakes i use a torker2 right now help!!!
I may have missed something but what gear do you have?
i have 3.73 gears with 26' tires
