I don't think there was even such a thing as a 289 in '62, was there? Weren't they 260's or 221's then?

Yup thats correct, first 289s were a mid model year '63 introduction. Came out approx same time as the '63 1/2 Galaxie fastbacks(Janurary) and the mighty 427... Of course all three morphed from earlier designs...  The fastbacks were redesigns of the '63 boxtops with T-bird roofline, and the 427 is the ultmate FE, which stemmed from the 406, 390, 352... The fastbacks(can you say Lee Iacocca?) were designed to put some life in Fords stogy (can you say Robert MacNamara?) carline, and 427s purpose was to kick ass in NASCAR, which the pair did in grand fashon for the '63 season... Unfortunatly the 427 more than met it's match in '64 when Chrysler reintroduced the Hemi...

Still all this don't mean it's not an orignal '66 289 stuffed into a Ranchero. I have a '68 289 (from a Cougar no less)that I need to get off my ass and sell, as I ain't ever gonna use it...
