Question: Should i paint that strip?
Title: Painting my bird, need opinions

well i put the gst ground effects kits on my car and a spoiler, and now its time to get this bad boy painted. i would put a pic up on here but i cant figgure it out. i need a consensus of tbird owners as to what to do with the paint. we all know that the 87 has the black molding with some color metal line going through it. i saw a guy who painted that also to the color of his car, and was wondering if i should do that. also i was going to debadge my grill, and get that painted. what is the general opinion of doing that. besides polling also leave n e written opinions if u have one.

We can't decide for you, its completely your decision. Myself, I don't like the painted moulding (well the sides) but others do. I'd prefer to keep the emblem also, especially on the chromed grill since it'd be impossible to fill the mounting holes in properly. If a tc, its been tried and it looked too bare, but that may only be because we're used to seeing the bird on the front.

Just hope you don't regret either decision down the road :)

As for painting the insert it depends on the color you go with in most cases. In my case since the car is a TC it had the red insert and it absolutley looked like a$$ with the blue paint so I painted it body colour.

What color is the car and what color will it be?

Just another example for you. I painted EVERYTHING! Moldings, the chrome stripe in the moldings and my current wheels are painted to match. This is with the turbo coupe header panel and everything else stock sport.

When I bought the car it was white with the black/chrome moldings, and the chrome grill was painted white with the bird still chrome(never took any pics of it then :(). I think I liked the grill better painted than chrome though, I'm just not a fan of chrome...

Crystal, why do you have a STOP sign sticking out the back of your car???

Is your third brake light not working??? :grinno:

I knew I forgot to do something!

*note to self, remember to Tom-Proof posts*

My 85 has no third brake light, should I stick it on the back of that one instead?

I painted my bumper strip.. but I used Wal-Mart flat black. I may change that at some point.. in certain light conditions it completely fades into the new color I put on.

On the picture:
Original 18 year old Regatta Blue on top
Wal-Mart flat black bumper strip
DupliColor Gunmetal Metallic below

There was also a chrome strip on that bumper.. but not in the center of the strip like the 87-88s. I painted over that with the flat black.

(the same flat black is in the headlight surrounds and in the grille.. but I might paint the grille body color one of these days)

EDIT: Oh hell, I forgot.. the Vicodin will do that to ya.. anyway, if I were going to go monochromatic with the car, I'd also consider matching the bumper strip to the rest.

crystals bird is so shagy lol

As for my opinon I get rid, or paint over all chrome mouldings.  It'll give it a more sportier look, an lil less like your grandma's car. (especially for cougar owners..)

I'd say toss the pieces between the wheels and paint the rest. I have my reasons. :p

Nope. Power antenna. Which needs to be oiled regularly to extend and retract completely. :disappoin

a lot of cars came with them from the factory. Look on ebay or in a junkyard if you want to change antennas. The swap is pretty straight forward

Hey, I resent that remark!! :)  lol  My car was originally purchased new in 85 by my grandpa.  I am slowly but surely transforming it from Grandpa-ish to race-ish.  I plan to keep the trim black on my car.  I was thinking that if you paint it all one color the rubber may fade at a different rate than the rest of the car resulting in a poor look.  I could be wrong but that was a concern of mine.  Maybe if you keep up on wax and such maybe it's not a factor.

just my opinion, but you could paint the black plastic or rubber to match the car, and then paint the chrome stripe in the trim black.... i tried to imaging it before it was done to mine, but couldn't think of how it would look, ... could bring everything together...

Maybe you could heat it up with a hair dryer to make it more pliable?

it wont bend back, both of my cars are bent, and they dont budge

youd have to pull em off, pull out the aluminum strips, then glue em back on, so theyd have to come off anyways
