Title: HO conversion.
Post by: Tfizzle on March 13, 2006, 09:34:48 PM
okay im lookin to do the HO conversion on my 88 bird lx.  got a few questiosns about some of the parts.  ive been lookin on ebay for the mustang computer and have found some but i dont know if they are the right ones.  some say A9L while others say A9P.  even some others say like DV1 or somethin.

which one do i need?  i know the guide at cool cats lists a model number but i cant seem to find that one.  do i want the wiring harness from the mustang to or can i just use the one i got?

If you are running an auto you have to use an A9P. If you go manual trans you can use either one.

Can't comment on the harness as I have zero experience with the T-Bird V8 cars (I assume that's what you currently have)

If you have a V6 you definitley need a Mustang or T-Bird V8 harness

Not so, you can run either auto or manual EEC with either tranny... In fact I run the A9L in my AOD Bird, found it idles much better, and cruses better in the 1500 rpm range with none of the bucking I got from the A9P or the Ford Racing C3W1. Granted my issues are mostly due to big cam, aftermarket heads, etc. but it does show there are differences in the adaptability of the different EECs.

I'm running the manual with my AOD as well, and I love it. Seems to be a lot crisper.

yeah i was gonna say, the guide says you can use either a auto or manual in a AOD tbird but not the other way around.  meaning you cant use a auto mustang computer in a manual tbird.  isnt that what the guide is saying?

anyways, does anyone have a A9L they are wanting to sell?  im gonna post over in the WTB forum.

Probably but I have run all four combos and they all work. My 5 speed Mustang bucked at 1500 rpms, no matter what EEC was installed and the engine was basically stock. As far as vehicle the Mustang EECs are stupid, they have no Idea if they are in a Stang, Bird or a F150(my buddy has a HO converted standard tranny P/U, running a auto Stang EEC).

Hmmm....that's interesting as I've always heard the opposite from various Mustang owners who've done mass air conversions who happened to have AOD's and the car would never run right unless an AOD spec'd EEC was installed (like the A9P) but the 5 speed guys report either the AOD or 5-Speed spec EEC's work fine in theirs.

It's also notable that at one time back in the early days of fuel injected 5.0's (86-88) that installing an EEC from an AOD Mustang was a popular mod as the AOD EEC was said to have more aggressive timing and fatter fuel curves to help make the slushbox AOD feel a little peppier. Whether that's true or not and showed a power difference on a 5.0 I don't know. I do know that on a mass air setup that the A9L is considered the hot ticket EEC to have and it does work well on my setup as that's the computer my donor car had.

if you are doing a mass air conversion the a9 family will work. the da1 is a speed density computer.
