Title: Ford V4 engine
Post by: Thunder Chicken on December 07, 2005, 02:17:45 PM
Anybody ever seen a Ford V4 engine? I had never seen one, though I do know that the original Mustang concept had one. The old guy across the road from my cottage has a large ashpalt sealer that has a pump powered by a Ford V4 industrial engine. It has the distributor up front (where God intended), a single barrel carburetor, and a single exhaust port on each cylinder head. It appears to have a 60-degree V, so it may be ralated to the cologne engine family, but I'm not sure of the V angle (it's buried pretty deep in the machine). I dunno how old it is, its power rating, or its displacement, but it's a neat looking little thing...

Yes, there were a couple V4s used overseas.  I don't remember whether it was related to the Cologne or Esshag stuff though.  I'm wanting to say Cologne.  The Cologne stuff has the dist in the back though....at least the 2.6/2.8/2.9 V6's do.

I never knew Ford did it.  I knew Saab did though.

Yes, I've actually had to work on one of those old Saab Sonnets when I used to work at a Saturn/Saab/Isuzu dealership. Very strange car, kinda looked like an Opel. It was owned by a Saab enthusiast (didn't know there was such a thing) and he was having a helluva time trying to restore it. You think finding parts for fox T-Birds and Cougas is hard, try restoring one of those suckers.

Come to think of it, though it was a decade ago, I vaguely remember the owner saying the V4 in his car was a Ford-sourced engine. I didn't do any engine work to that car, so I didn't really get into the mechanical aspect - I was rewiring it after some mice or squirrells made lunch of the original wiring. I do know that earlier models were two strokes, but his car was a later four-stroke V4 model.

I'm not 100% sure the dist was in the front - I'm not 100% sure which was the front and which was the back. The engine was very deeply buried in the machine and there were pumps, hoses, belts, etc on both ends of the engine. The only reason I think it was a 60-degree engine was because it was so tiny physically.

One of my friends here in Romania has a Ford Capri with a V4 in it, I will talk to him and get some pictures.

The Saab Sonett used a Ford V4 in them. The only thing I could find on it was all in some ferin type langue.
Also if I remember correctly they were used in some farm tractors.

I found a couple pics of them online.

It's got a neat gear-driven cam, too!  If these were more common around here I think it'd be cool to try and maybe turbo it or put it on a  lawnmower or somethin'.

took me a rather long time, but here is a link to the pics of a 1.3 litre V4 engine in a Ford Capri :http://www.4tuning.ro/forum/viewtopic.php?p=332734#332734

I would have posted them here, but they are larger than the forum max allowed size.
