Title: Pay you $20 to shoot me
Post by: sum_weirdo on November 08, 2005, 06:25:39 PM
Months of work and a small fortune spent but my engine rebuild is just about done.  Engine was ready to go in today, everything accounted for...except one imperceptible detail.  The heads are on backwards :flip: I was weary of that possibility when I put them on but I went over them and they appeared to be interchangable, identical from one end to the other, they ARE identical from one end to the other except on one side a bolt hole is just a bolt hole and on the other side that same hole actually goes somewhere.  Some THING that I don't even know the proper name of that's in the picture below is supposed to link with those holes.  I CAN'T DESTROY ALL MY HARD WORK RE-DISMANTLING THE ENGINE JUST TO FLIP THE HEADS AROUND SO THOSE DAMM HOLES FACE AFT!!  There's got to be something else I can do.....

OK $20 bux its a deal... :2gunsfiri

That port is for the thermactor air injection, you can just block it off as it ain't really necessary.

You're not just saying that to lull me into a false sense of security while you creep up behind me are you?  *looks behind me*  Okay so I can just block those holes altogether and it won't compromise anything?

actually you can thread the threaded plugs out of the end of the head with a little heat and a screw driver, because the heads are interchangable. im pretty sure you can even get the inserts from the dealer still

I don't think I can do that on these, both sets of holes are threaded, the blockage is way back in the hole.  I could drill through it but shavings would fall in and I don't know what they'd interact with.

just plug the holes . ford carries them that is for the smog equipment and if you dont have smog checks i would throw it all away.....................

otherwise you will have to remove the plugs that are blocking the passages. and reinsert them in the other end of the head.

Since there aren't any smog checks here I think I'll just plug the holes and throw out that whole system.  One less thing draging on my engine.  Besides my new distributor should improve emissions with better combustion in the cylinder so it's a wash.  Thanks guys, you made my day.

My backwards E7 heads have just given me another problem.  The bolt that holds my steering pump to the engine is supposed to go into the block but the hole (same hole the thermactor uses) is larger than on my stock heads.  The bolt is 7/16 and the hole is 9/16.  It's hard to tell right now if the opposite holes at the back of the engine are 9/16 as well since the engine is in the car now but I'm fairly sure they're the same size and they're both threaded.  I got those heads off a 1990 Bronco with a 351.  I don't really recall if it used a similar pump but assuming I go back to Pickn'pull and find a pump from a car or truck with E7 heads that will bolt to a 9/16 hole is there any reason it wouldn't be compatible with my car?  Beyond that does anyone have an easy fix for this?  I spent all day looking at things like Helicoils only to find they aren't meant to be adapters.

thats what i was talking about if you look close the rear threaded holes have inserts in them with a smaller treaded hole, but they screw out and can be put back in the front.

Ahh now I see.  Didn't quite get what you meant at the time.  I'll see if my local Ford dealer has them.
