Title: High Idle/Low Idle Blues [FIXED!]
Post by: Ether947 on October 18, 2005, 10:34:04 AM
Ok on the 88 TC when I first fire it in the morning it runs and idles fine (minus a few knocks and whatnot, but a tune-up is coming soon). Then after I pull out of my complex to the first light it idles high... around 1800-2100 rpms and stays that way all the way to work. Now that is better than what it used to do, idle low and cut off, until I cleaned out the IAC. BUT! When I fire it afterwards, even if the engine is warm, it wants to die. Put it in gear and drive a bit, it's fine except for the high idle again. What the freak is going on?

I cleaned out the egr.... sorta, the vacuum lines were routed wrong so I disconnected it, because it would sputter and die. Runs great without it.

Also when it's idling high, i can disconnect the IAC and it will go down. Reconnect and it idles around 1000 rpms. Any ideas? I'm so used to thinking about carbs that I can't think of all the components and how they work together. :\

Pull codes for starters

my TC idles at 1000rpms, for a while, it would hang at 1500, then 3000, turned out it was my TPS causing the problems

you know how to pull codes?

autozone or advanced should be able to pull the codes for you, or is that only on the newer vehicles.

got two codes... don't remember what the first one was but the second one was TPS out of spec. Voltage was like at 1.6v at idle. Adjusted it to .98. We changed the IAC out, corrected some vacuum line routing and today it idles right at a 1000. Couldn't be happier. Thanks everybody.
