Title: Crank pulley thingy
Post by: Haystack on September 27, 2005, 04:21:52 PM
So you all prolly remember my dammed water thread,...
Well I finally got around to getting a new timing chain cover from the junk yard(about 4 hours worth, but it took me about 8 or 9) So I get it off and bring it home. Get ready to pull off my crank and my harmonic balancer and I cant turn it without moving the engine. Any tips/hits here? And I tell you its a pain. I had to pull off all accesories exept the alt. Not recomended. Be careful with your water pump.

Use an impact gun. You should be able to hold the balancer with your hand and zip the bolt out. Thant's how I got mine out. took about two seconds.

If you don't have access to air tools, you'll just have to find a way to lock the crank in place. I don't know if it would work, but I have a set of strap wrenches for oil filters, pipes, etc.  The biggest one would probably wrap around the balancer, but I don't know if its strong enough to hold.

If the engine is still in the car, putting it in gear with the wheels down, or in park for an auto,  should hold the crank still enough to break that bolt loose.

If your feeling really reckless, you could probably wedge a breaker bar on it and hit the starter.....

Hope ya find something that works.

Yes this can be a pain whe doing it with hand tools.
But if u use a breaker bar and wrap a cloth around the handle and use the palm of your hand and smack it u can break the bolt lose.

I just did my took my heads in my driveway this way.

ive done it to the 351 and the 302 now, BUT both involved putting a big (7/8" to 1") wrench against the crank and the block then putting a breaker bar on the balaner bolt...then smack with hammer and repeat the smack with hammer step until it breaks loose.

if you can get a good sharp smack on it the motor wont turn and the bolt with break free. a wrench and a hammer have been my impact tools for tearing down both of these motors :D

I know you can do this on the 2.3 engine

check the rotation of the harm first on your engine

take a 1/2 break over bar and the socket needed to fit the Harm bolt
rest the handle of the braker over bar on the ground

Then just "bump" the starter and the bolt will break loose
