When I had my 3.8 in my '88 Bird,i hollowed out the cats, added dual exhaust with nice Turbo lers, and it was great. It ran stronger (power you could actually feel). She has 5.0 power now, which,in my opinion is one of the best mods you can do to a 3.8..........swap it.

Could be any number of things......IAC, ignition module, TPS........... When was the last time you gave it a good tune up?  I had an old car that would cut out on idle only when it was wet or raining out.......The cause?  Distributor cap had a HOLE in it.

Gutting the cat is one of the worst things you can do.  There's that one steel line running from the cat into a sensor near the pas. side exhaust manifold that monitors the exhaust. That might have failed.
