No matter how much steel you wrap yourself in, you're still only as safe as you drive. :disappoin

Holy ! I guess that white blanket is covering the driver?
Hooray for the Unibody! Notice the hood is completely untouched.
Wow... how in the hell do you cut the car completely in half... as you said, WITHOUT damaging the hood.
I'm going to hazard a guess that speed was a hefty factor.

Woah.... :disappoin
Good point.
I started reading the artical and totally forgot about another lost T-bird. It puts it all in perspective, doesn't it?
Certainly. I just read the article on the crash. After seeing the other photo, I'm amazed only one was killed.
*edit* Just started the other one. Turns out the one in critical condition didn't make it either.
Actually two where killed. The two who were in the front seats. One dead at the scene and the 15 year old driver died later.
EDIT: you beat me to it.
Maybe we can get this thread deleted. All of a sudden it's become more than a little innapropriate. I was looking for a picture of a T-bird door for the other thread, and found that image. No story attached to it.
Yeah not a pleasant topic. But if I may, doesn't it look like the front end is a 83-86?
wow guy's that is awful.it's not the first time ive seen this. in 2000 i was standing in my dads drive way that sit's on busy street and a sharp corner when a mustang hit a taurs broad side and cut it in two the car tore into leaveing the drive in the front seat another 2 inches and he would have went with the front of the mustang . every one walked away from this one...i hope these pix act as a wake up call every one please be careful.
Yeah. It shows just how much fox bodies like to swap ends. A 200' skid at only 100kph (60mph). Another reason why I will never drive it in the winter. Splitting in half is scary enough.
Nope. It has corner lenses.
If they skidded 200' and had enough speed to rip the car in half, they were going
way over 60mph to start with.
Wow, I'm speechless...
well...its part of life
I Saw a Dodge Coronet and ended like this in my old city.......he was traveling at least 90 Mph....

I was thinking the same thing, but these are the facts we're left with. Still, these cars are notorious for 180's.
Yes They Are When I Got My Cat At 16 Year's Old''the Same One You All See'' I Was Turnig Left At An Interseaction After Just Leaving The Red Light Turned The Corner At Prob 8 To 10 Mhp And She Done A 180 On Me .
Actually I don't think this should be deleted. It could serve as a lesson about how even though these cars are big and strong, there are bigger and stronger objects out there. Plenty of us have walked away from major crashes in these cars, but obviously some weren't so lucky. Drive carefully.
Perhaps a change of title is in order to let people know there's a bit more than a fender bender...
I saw that right after it was origionally posted and quickly dismissed it as photoshop. I'm completely shocked that a fox body would break in two, and not just wrap around the pole, like most wrecks.
There was an accident here about a decade ago in which a car load of young guys in a Fox Mustang were racing around on a local twisty road. They went sideways, hit a pole and the car sheared in half just like that Thunderbird did. Four of the five guys in the car died instantly. The fifth (the driver) killed himself shortly after being released from hospital.
I also seem to remember seeing photos of a bad one in an SN95 Mustang in BC, Canada, a few years ago that the car split in half and killed a bunch of kids.
These Fox cars are strong as hell in a frontal impact, but they're like pop cans when broadsided. No side impact protection at all...
Will, do. The insensitive first line will be changed as well.
It's incredible that three of the five people in that car actually survived and only one of them was wearing a seatbelt. I mean, just look at the thing. Absolutely incredible.
Looks to me like the car broke off at the front subframe. Not really all that surprising.
Thats a sad story witch every way u look at it.
I know my self my daughter and son are my Life and i would feel the same way he did and mostly do the same thing if i could not find a way to easy pain out of my mind thats for sure,
Today is not a good day for me see this kinda shiznit anyway,
Had a realy bad day yesterday that will take a long time to forget what i seen happen.
But it do show that shat can happen and happen realy fast, Be it kids crashing, drunks, little old lady going for brakeshiznitting the gas.
. :( I think I'll be getting subframe connectors ASAP!
I'm with you dark! Super Subs here I come. That Is some wild stuff. I bet they were doing well over 60.
I'd believe 60 at the point of impact - after the 200 foot skid.
Subframes connect the rearward frame sections(under the rear seat) would not have helped in this instance. Apparently it hit just at the correct point to split it, or maybe this was a poorly halved/rust damaged car?? Its almost impossible for me to believe a solid car split apart.
Either way just proves the unexpected can happen in a instance...
Yeah it pretty much looks like it sheared off at the firewall...Dunno.
About 10 years ago there was an accident on the freeway around here, where a full size Dodge van crossed the median, and hit a fox Mustang hatch in the rear tire area. The Mustang split right behind the front seats, luckily both occupants survived.
Back in '03, a couple of friends of mine died in a Mustang, it looked a lot like that Thunderbird did...
They were going too fast, lost control and broadsided another vehicle on the road.
I too, think these and other Fox cars are weak as hell in the sides from a high speed impact....then in '04 a guy in a brand new Mach 1 'Stang
ripped it right into after hitting a tree at about 40 mph....
he walked away with no injuries at all, but he was ONLY going 40!
Don't take life for granted, and when ya get that urge to mat the go pedal, just remember that white Thunderbird... :disappoin
the car splitting probably is the only reason those that survived did. its so shocking to see those photos...its supprising anyone survived. sad story all together.
maybe the subframes wouldnt do much but its diffinetly got me thinking more seriously about a 6 point. reality wise though, you cant go running around scared that somethings going to hapen. if its gonna happen theres nothing you can do about it. all i can say is be safe and think twice.
i remember being younger...not that much younger btw i wouldnt have thought twice about laying a posi strip through an intersection at a light with people all around. it was so ignorant and disrespectfull. i know that now...thought i was cool then. if simply growing up and having responsibility didnt change me it was the birth of my first daughter. it changed everything. makes me worry alot about what other people around me are doing. i realy have to fight the urge to smack around someone doing the same ignorant stuff i used to...i guess its true what they say...to be old and wise you must first be young and stupid. i know i was...not sure about the wise thing though.. ;)
You Ever See What Happens To These Things When Picked Up In The Front By A Tow Truck.talk About Body Flex You Would Half To Pick The Door Up To Close It.i Made The Driver Put It Down And Come Back With A Flat Bed.
Depending on how u do subframes counts,
Most do little bars weld them in around tranny crossmember and weld in near the lower arms, My frame is welded at the back of the were rear end bolts in and has new plates that go in were arms connect and are welded to the frame. My front goes past tranny right to front the start to wrap there way up to the firewall. Its more a full frame then just connectors. It also gives much more soport and is alot better to cage later, My 83Kat was done like this and when it i crashed it i was punted off hwy and went backwards into a wall at 110KMs 55MPH around there,
I almost walked away I could have if i wanted but since i have hurt my back b4 and i took a hell of hit it was very wise to wait,
No amout of safty stuff can make u 100% safe, facts are person with no seat belt has less odds of being Ok over a person straped in. But every year there is a huge crash somewere were the person is ejected and come sout with a few scrachs and person in car with seatbelt is killed. Same can be said about other view were person that is not belted in would have lived if they had a seatbelt on.
Then u have people killed by airbags ot kids in front seat and airbag,
Best bet is to have a pack of Lifesavers get out of that 5 mile area around your home as fast as u cant because most crashs happen near home.
SirChirp
im going to have to thank the cop that pulled me over for doing 56 in a 35 and scared the pee out of me. now in my taurus i do the speed limit no more. and in my tbird all i do at the most is stomp on it till i get 5 over thats it. did 95 in it one time and will never do it again. scared the out of me. shiznit just stomping on it and getting up to speed scares me a lil and im happy. i would be more scared if it didnt.
it just comes down to this you dont give a 16-20 year old a car that is fast. my first 5 cars were taurus and they can get out of there way and seeing the size they are fast. but by driving that then going to my tbird. there is no way in hell i would let my kid ever have a car till they are old enough to buy it themself and put there own insurance on it.
plz note i am 20 and im still at that stupid point. and if i do somthing stupid i know it was my fault and i will take the blame
88SptCoupe: Im 20 also, and i used to drive the speed limit and nothing more for the longest time...then i got my turbo coupe
i do drive like an idiot, ive told stories about me almost wrapping it around a pole
as Shame302 stated, you cant be scared of death, or injury, you have to know, and accept that one day, it can and will happen.
i BMX, go to skateparks, etc, and i would be terrified of hurting myself, and guess what, i would be so focused on it that i would hurt myself, i stopped caring, and got less injuries
just relax and do what you gotta do, no need to be uptight and all, just dont be stupid
I would say if I had a young kid that I wanted to not kill themselves I'd give them a 2.3L Mustang and they should be fine ;) Except that I had one, and just about wrecked it a couple times being stupid, and a couple doing nothing wrong at all. Yeah, those things have no power, but they still have plenty to get up to 70 mph. I took a corner too fast in that car once and bounced off the guardrail, I spun it on the highway in the pouring rain (bald tires), spun it once in winter when I hit some ice (going faster than I shoulda been), near lost it in some slushy snow a couple times, almost rearended several people (those awesome fox brakes!)... Makes you wonder what can really be considered safe!
Now I'm 24 and I've had my Thunderbird for almost 2 years. I try not to be too crazy with this car because I really treasure it (first car I was able to buy with my own money) but even so I managed to booger up the driver's side of it because I wasn't paying attention last summer. I don't get too stupid in it most of the time, because I'm scared to death of wrecking it or blowing it up.
I think it all comes down to responsibility.
I got my car when I was 16 and never did anything stupid in it. Well maybe one thing. I was all by myself (nobody in the car, no cars on the road) and was making a left. I floored it and had it sideways. That scared me a bit so I never did it again.
I've had that car now for 4 years (I'm 20 now) and the only minor incident I had was because somebody almost hit me and I swerved causing no damage but a busted rim.
I had some friends in High School that had some really fast cars. They were responsible and never messed one up.
It's the ones who are not responsible who you have to watch out for. Like the kid with the old Civic hatchback who rolled, killing 2 people, or the girl in a V-6 Camaro who went flying up the shoulder of the road, lost control and flipped it up onto a hill about 100 feet from the road(This i did see). In High School we had several moments of silence for those irresponsible people who did these kinds of things.
It doesn't matter how old you are. If your irresponsible, this kind of stuff can happen. It also doesn't matter if your driving a 4-banger Tempo or a 5.0 Mustang. Give a responsible 16 year old the fastest car in the world and chances are, they will not wreck it. Unless they really don't know how to drive ;)
if you have responsibility fine like i said im 20 and i was in one minor incident were i rear ended a lady on ice and it broke my bumber and didnt really do much to her car she didnt even call the cops.
the fact is you can kill yourself in anything when you doing stupid things. but im going off the believe of what red_lx said that he bought it himself and he really treasures it. im the same way my dad bought my frist car and helped me with my second my first car was a 86 3.8 liter tbird for 350 bucks with a blown engine we put a new one in it and sold the car for 600 made i think 150 off the car. that 600 went towards my first car that i paid 1300 for and i been paying for them from then on. i care about my cars true i do stupid here and there but i just think back if my car was a lil bit faster what could have happened even worse.
Tbird232ci:
there is no need to be scared to die like you said when its your time its your time. but i dont see the point in making my time shorter over somthing that people in a forum will just talk about... when i die i hope its from somthing other then i lost control of my car, or a moron on the other side of the road lost control of there car. now your not scared of dieing, could you live with yourself if you killed somone from being stupid... you always must remember that your not the only one on the road, and theres other things out there then light poles and trees for you to hit. this is one of the facts that keeps me from doing alot of the stupid shiznit i think about
U want to make a Kid respect his car make Him PAY FOR IT.
When its given free and daddy will fix the car and mommy will give gas money who cares its all good.
When they work to build it or pay for it then its alot harder when they get tickets and damage the car.
Then again some kids dont give a shiznit
im not saying "go out and be stupid and dont be scared", im saying, do what you do, do youre thing, if its speeding, doing the speed limit, or whatever, just dont be stupid
i also paid for my turbo coupe, my father bought me my 3.8L car, it wasnt even going to be mine, but when my mom declined it, then it became my car, i dont want to mess either of my cars up, but many times, there isnt shiznit you can do
you can be the greatest driver in the world, but it doesnt save you from other people
That is true. I have been in a few crashs, For some resion its never my falt.
Worse was i got my car out from being painted around 7pm at night, I wa salmost home and stoped at a read light, A guy in SUV was drunk and he rearended me.
Needless my insureance broker was not to happy.
After the last crash i seen I'm going to cage my T bird next weekend if i can.
Still have butterflys just driving right now.
now to me that says you were a good driver and now that you got your turbo coupe, you do stupid shiznit.. doesnt make sense to me
and true you have to watch out for other drivers doesnt mean you have to be a moron and be a driver people need to watch out for..
yes, while i do drive like a moron at times, its only at times, open roads, back roads, to where its just myself
whats the point of having a performance car, or a car ive spent time and money on modding and getting to run right and handle nicely, if all im going to do is just drive the speed limit?
"my car runs 11's" "wanna race" "no, never"
these aren't the safest cars ever made, but I would rather be in one of these then a civic or small car in a high speed impact. Driving stupid is stupid. There is nothing more to it. I like to go fast and yeah its fun. But when I go fast it is on a two lane road at midnight rather then weaving in and out of traffic during rush hour on the freeway. I dont want to hurt anyone else. I dont like to drive on the freeway with people in the car going the speed limit. If you sit in my car you will wear your seat belt.
The point is that if I drive fast it isnt going to affect anyone else if I can help it. If you wanna be stupid then fine. Dont screw someone else over it.
Reminds me of something that happened in my senior year of highschool. I was heading to school in April and we had one of our big april rains in Chicago so it was rather wet out. I was sitting at a stop light waiting to make a left turn. The turn lane I was in had 2 turning lanes (ie 2 left turn lanes 2 that go straight). Well next to me waiting to turn was a girl from the school next door to mine (I went to a all boys catholic highschool and next door was a all girls catholic highschool) who had just gotten a 91 4 banger Mustang. Well I kinda know her and when the light turned for us to turn she decided that she was going to show off her new wheels. Well she hit the gas WAY too hard while turning and spun the car around 2 times (mind you its been raining for 4-5 hours at this point) and almost smacks into the side of my Bird. She continues to spin and smacks a light pole which takes out the rear of the car and causes the pole to fall. Well the guy infront of me stoped to watch so I'm stuck behind him watching all this happen. Well when the pole began to fall I noticed that it was going to fall right on the roof of the Bird. I said "holy sh*t" and slamed on the gas to go around the guy in front of me. I swear that is the only time I've driven the Bird in the rain and slamed on the gas and the car acctually grabbed and took off. The pole misssed the Bird by 2 feet. That scared the cr*p out of me. I pulled over and ran back to the Stang and found the girl standing next to the car in a daze staring. She was ok and the cops came to get statements from me and the other guy. Needless to say she got a big ticket. Just goes to show that an inexperienced driver can do stupid things even with a car that doesn't have much power.
Personally I can't really agree with that, being as i've now had 2 cars given to me. My first car ('80 Ford Fairmont Wagon w/ an inline 6) and my current car (the Bird). My second car is the only car i've ever paid for. Anywho getting to the point, I personally believe it's the upbringing of sorts that is the main bearing on how a kid handles his/her car. I do agree that "spoiled" children have a tendency to play to rough with their cars since they know that mom and pop will get them outta a jam. Where-as, in mine as well as i'm sure others situations, I was raised to respect and take care of my belonging's. Any car I have had I have sunk ungodly amounts of money into them, irregardless of whether or not it was a rust bucket. I need my cars to get me to and from work, the grocery store, doctor, to visit family and friends houses, etc. etc. . I have never had the luxury of being able to just go out and drive the hell out of any of my cars. One day I hope to be able to, but for now i'm content with just basic a to b travel.
Even still, Haystack. Safer is a relative term. No matter what you drive, You're always three feet from death. It's enough to make someone pay attention.
And Shawn "My car runs 11's" "wanna race" "track's open fridays and saturdays". Sounds resonable to me.
