Title: Engine hoisting....

I'm planning to pull my engine next Saturday, subject to either renting or buying a cherry picker.  I've never actually pulled an engine before and I want to do it right so I'm trying to find the best way to attach the chain to the engine.  The Chilton manual makes a reference to lifting brackets on the exhaust manifold but there's no picture and I honestly can't see what they're talking about.  What do you do?

is your car a 2 brl or cfi?

if so go to o'reilys or any parts store and get a lift plate there only like 8 buck and make it alot easier!

It's 2 BRL.  I think I've heard of those, they lock into the manifold opening right?  That's a good idea, thanks!

You gotta be careful with those factory lifting eyes anyway. On my thunderbird, the stock engine had one on the exhaust manifold and one on the intake. The one on the exhaust manifold had a crack in it under where the bolt went through it (unbeknownst to me at the time). I started lifting out the engine, got it a little over a foot above the K-member and the rear lifting eye let go. Thank god the one on the intake held (I had to get the engine the rest of the way out with just that one), otherwise my engine woulda fallen right across my header panel, radiator support, and bumper and I would have been a very, very, very unhappy person to say the least.

Whatever you do, don't trust the intake manifold bolts to hold the weight of the engine and tranny.  I had my '84 cougar come crashing down when I tried using them.  The bolt ricocheted like 3 times before it landed somewhere off in the corner of the garage.

I used a come-a-long and the old head bolts and attached the chain to my block with them for my old 200 inline.. that engine was pretty light though. And yes. I protected everything when it went back in.. didn't want scratched on my newly freshened block.

If I use a lift plate will the carb bolts handle the weight of a 302 or should I buy new ones?  If so does anyone know the specs on those bolts?

yes , as long as they are not damaged or rusty


for the record i had a 429/c-6 hanging off of a set of stock intake studs :D

I think everyone is talking about those plates that bolt on where the carb goes, not the intake bolts :D . I would never trust the carb studs for that. :brick:

Yeah carb studs might be a little "taxed" holding that much weight. :D
