Title: help belt problems

i did a rebuild on my 88 before i found this forum but i found a problem and i dont know how or way this happened and i have no clue how to fix it. but here is a pic as you can see its like my alt or smog pump is off and my belt is rubbing. could i have the smog pump upside down or somthing?

did you try turning the smog pulley around?

the pulley is on the right way its like the whole smog pump is on wrong but i dont see how that could be

could prolly bypass it pretty easy. I guess you have emmisions?

nope live in michigan no emmisions but i cant see how i could bypass it wouldnt the belt rub on the tensioner?

I *think* that you could use the belt tensioner and just use a shorter belt.

so get a belt that is short so it pushes the tensioner up more out of my way

I couldn't really see much in those photos. When you start the car and it's idling, and you lift the hood, can you see a physical wobble in any of the pullies? It could be that one of them is not seating properly, or is out of round, or you may just need a new idler pulley. You can try tightening down the air pump bolts with the belt on...same for the water pump bolts. Those bolts have to be tightened down under the load of the belt. Have you thrown the belt off before or something?

if you live in michigan, just yank the smog pump. just a waste of hp.. hehe. :P

thx everyone i will just pull it now that i see the way i have to run the belt it all make sence i couldnt understand how it would work with using the same path just not going to the smog pump.

it looks to me like the bottom bolt on the alt. is not tight enough and its rubbing against the pulley
