Title: Hood Swap from plane Jane to TC w/scoops
Post by: randyk666 on September 02, 2017, 01:03:18 AM
I purchased an 87 TC hood w/scoops on ebay, it arrived by Grayhound in excellent condition.
Has anyone swapped out there plane Jane hood for a TC hood w/scoops and having a 5.0 CFI with the round air cleaner? I still want to keep the scoops functional, deleting the 2.3 air ducting under the hood. Any interference with fan shroud or air cleaner? Any mods to the air cleaner? any suggestions will help, Thanks

The TC hood swap has been done by a lot of the guys on here. Shouldn't have any problems. You didn't say what year your car is but if it is a "4-eye" I'm pretty sure you can also swap in 87/88 Tbird hood hinges/springs. This will allow you to do away with the hood prop rod. Good luck and welcome... Great guys here with lots of knowledge on these cats.... Oh yeh, the ducting under the TC hood is easily removed.... Ray.

I ran one on my 83 CFI 5.0 with no clearance issues.

I'd figure out the drainage situation, unless your engine likes drinking water ;)

I ran one for four years and about 80k miles on a 86 5.0 .Never blocked off the vents. Its not much different then driving through a puddle.

Make sure the motor mounts are good. Mine broke and i broke both scoops.

OP mentioned working "ram air", hence my keeping the water out comment.

Im not sure how you would hook the scoops up to the snorkels on the air cleaner base but you could make a pan that sits in place of the factory air cleaner that seals to bottom of hood with foam. It would be pretty big to catch the hood scoops but would work.

the 1990 ford bronco and all the other late 80's / early 90's would have the duct work you need.

ive studied this for avery long time and fit tested to some degree the parts.

check out any of the pick up trucks

once you look under the hood of the pick up's you will see what i mean.

i would suggest you dont throw away the ducting on the tc hood.  its useful for getting to the next step of air flow.
