hey im new here and was woundering if any one could tell me the problem here ..... my car is an 1988 thunderbird 5.0 auto when i bought the car i was told it was an X RCMP (Royal canadian mounted police ) car ..... when i start it and put it into drive it will stall unless i rev the engine... the car runs great untill you put it into gear after that if it dosent stall its flawless (the way it runs anyways ) thanks

maybe a defective idle air motor ?
I have about the same problem with my 88 TC but its when I first start it stalls but runs fine when I restart.. not sure what the problem is just changed timing belt
I agree, you can try cleaning it with some carb cleaner, then spray it with some WD40. Also the base idle may be set too low. To check, disconnect the plug from the IAC with the engine warm. If it will start and idle a little slower than normal, it's OK. If it won't idle at all, the screw on the throttle body needs to be turned inward enough to get it to idle at approx 550 rpms(5.0) or 650 for a 2.3...
If the base idle needs adjusted the TPS voltage should be checked as well, but thats another subject...
thanks
