Title: My Beater '96 F-150 5.0
Post by: TurboCoupe50 on March 28, 2015, 10:37:01 AM
Some of you know I owned a '93 Lightning, but after 7+ years I was tiring of it and really needing more of a "hauler"... Sooo I sold it to a buddy, then picked up the first thing on Craigslist I went to see that was about four miles up the road(this was Nov '12)...

It's a fairly good 25-30 footer but nowhere nearly as nice as the Lightning, but for $1200 I ain't complaining... It was badly neglected but not overly abused, needed tires, brakes, ball joints and tail pipe to get a safety inspection, but was sporting a fresh sticker when I got it(gal said her boyfriend was a mechanic)... I had some tires on hand so a fresh set of pads got me on the road, and later repl the tail pipe and ball joints... Since I've put a list of parts on it longer than you arm(one fuel pump, tune up, radiator, belt, hoses, headliner etc, etc) but still have less than $500 additional in real money spent...

My favorite style of truck!

If that's your pic, what's the story on the truck behind it? :)

Orange and White, 1997, F-350, 460, U-Haul, Storage Shed

Motor runs quiet but doesn't have compression on #2&3, apparently has head gasket blown between cylinders, no loss of coolant...

That gen of trucks is great, I had a 95 5.0L shortbox back in the day.  A bit crude compared to the modern stuff, but very reliable and easy to repair.

cheers

I had a '96 F150 4X4, regular cab long box, 300 auto. Loved that truck, but unfortunately cancer got it. Aside from the 77-78-79, I think the 92-96 is my favourite bodystyle

Crude?? It has a 12v power port that even my '98 Grand Marquis doesn't have... :hick:

Yeah I like the '73-'77 as well... Years back a neighbor bought a new '77 that was probably the first F-150 I ever saw(I believe all were F-100 prior)...

The truck apparently hasn't ever been far from home, was built over at Norfolk assembly(closed '07) maybe five miles from here... Rust is all but nil, actually none on body, but the bare frame rusts a little anywhere you live... The ones that get run on the beach do often rust out, especially over rear wheels...

Helluva nice "beater" and yes...by then the interiors were getting really less truck-like.
For up-here-standards...that undercarriage is GREAT! Especially the rear axle!!!

Looks almost like my beater.  Except for color.  Unfortunately the rust is getting the better of mine.    I'd love a good one like that.

This picture is about 4 years old.  Wish she still looked like that.

Yeah that's nice, kinda makes me want the Lightning back...

I can(maybe could have, possibly sold) buy a '88 F-150 that belongs to a friends father that's been garage kept since new, has 44K mi... Problem is I don't like the flat face '87-'91 styling and has red interior, just as soon keep my '96, even if it does have over 4x the miles...

I would take an 88.  Too bad you weren't closer.  I do love the look of the newer ones, but just refuse to give them the money they want for them.  My idea of a good replacement truck would be that 87 - 97 range.  Still a heck of a truck and isn't going to cost me a small house payment in the process.

This is making me think I need a pickup truck for hauling things. You know the 2-3 times a year I actually need a pickup truck to haul things. It's much cooler than a white cargo van.

Was setting at a light early this evening when another B&S F-150 pulled up on the right and guy was hanging out the window looking mine up and down... I put down the window to see what was goin' on and he starts yelling "Man I Like Your Truck"... OK?... Well I could not really see his, so I said "Hey you already have my truck", and here comes another" I Like Your Truck"!! Well about that time the light changes, so I'm waiting to turn left and as he pulls away I see his is a total rust bucket, no wonder he liked my truck...
