i just had a question for you engine gurus...im eyeballing a 96 ford explorer 5.0 that is for sale locally. now i pretty much figured id just swap in a ho from a 87/92 mustang but this engine will be in-expensive. basically, i need somebody to school me on this thing, the differences between that and a stangs 5.0, and if the heads, cam and itake would work on my so...just looking at options but not knowing anything about the other motor limits me. thanks in advance...
yes,for the most part.it should have gt-40 heads on it,not the gt-40p,those came out early to mid 97.the cam has specs somewhere in between so and ho.actually,it has a split lift. i.e. .437/.444 i think.duration is less than ho.more of a low end grunt kinda thing. the explorer gt-40 type intake could work,but the egr system is somewhat different.if you dont have emmisions testing in your area,go to fordfuelinjection .com.somewhere on that sight is a diagram and specs for an egr eliminator that simply uses 3 resistors.check it out and you will see what i mean.also the intake has the curved elbow on it{at the throttle body}luckily it unbolts.if the throttle body is the 65mm like what came off my 98,then the fordfuelinjection sight also has an article on how to change the throttle linkage to work with our kind of setup.you will have to change the timing cover and possibly the balancer as well.just use your accessories and brackets etc.
I thought all Explorer engines had the GT-40P on the heads?? And that was the whole reason for those heads was the Explorer/Mountaineer?
IF Indeed it does have the GT-40P heads, I believe there is only one set of shorty headers for it...
there is one year of explorer, or part of one year, that had just GT40's on it, 30thtbird is right about that, i just dont know of specifics
if you were to stick an HO cam, or better in it, that would be a must stronger engine than a stock HO out of a stang
hmmm. i also found a guy with a 92 gt. its got 68k mikes on it and he is pulling the engine in 2 weeks. the motor sounds good and runs strong. sounds like its what im looking for. now if he doesnt go and jack up the price or something im going to try to puppies that. it should be alot easier. p[lus i might be able to get the computer and MAF as well. i think if i get that in the car it will hold me over so i can focus on squaring away on the suspension as well as preparing for the modular swap...
if indeed the explorer engine would be more powerfull with just the cam swap i may concider that if the stangs engine becomes un available. i just wanted to stay away from tearing down and rebuilding an engine. i dont have the tools or faculty suitable for an engine rebuild...

as a side note,check this out.camshaft part#f3ze-ca is the camshaft used in the 93 cobra R. it was phased into the thunderbird/cougarservice during the 93 model year. it produced more horsepower but less tourque. the specs are:
lift:451/451 duration:270/270 lobe center:115 intake/121.5 exhaust

Nice find on the info. Just one question that I have yet to find a deffinite answer on is the firing order on the Explorer cams......Seems every one of them that I have opened the hood on does not have that sticker that shows what the firing order is.... The last one I checked was a 99 with 70K on it that was still in the hands of the original owner. He states he never had such a sticker and I am inclined to believe him.....Different reference sources state different firing orders.

The info about the NON roller cams is pretty much gonna be B/S. By 94 in the F150 all cams were roller, I ain't believing any of the Exploders had non roller 5.0s
A little off the topic buy here's a FYI...
I just picked up a '85.5 truck 5.0 block that has the non roller cam, but IS a roller block. No doubt about it being original, as it came from a two owner p/u and I personally know both of them... As long as the block is OK(it has 290K mi), its gonna be the basis for a 347...

Yeah, I seen that one Carm, but I just saw the latest Chilton SUV manual for 2005 and THAT states that they had the old style order....Guess it's time to hit up a junkyard and compare one to an HO and than a NON HO.

The P/Us switched to the HO firing order and roller cam at the same time they went to mass air.. Since the Explorers are all mass air, I'd be suprised if they didn't have the HO pattern as well.
The Explorers all use the HO firing order. :D
