Title: Bought a 1968 XR7
Post by: Carl on August 23, 2013, 06:03:06 AM
Found it on craigslist for 5 grand and couldn't pass it up!  Ended up paying $4700.  The body is absolutely perfect with no rust or cracks at the usual places or anywhere else for that matter.  Needs the front and rear Valences, but those are pretty inexpensive to replace.  The only thing wrong with the interior is the leather is a little worn.  Has a freshly rebuilt 289, with a C6.  The VIN is a J-Code 302.  Since J-Code 302s are pretty expensive, I think I will just keep the 289.  Runs great!

Work I will be doing / having done in the future.

-Doing a disk brake conversion in the rear and a full suspension upgrade.
-The wiring needs to be organized to say the least, but everything is there.
-I will be replacing the vacuum operated flip open headlights with an electric unit.
-Putting a retro looking radio with modern inputs USB/AUX etc..

Sweet cat...

Cant believe Ford put the big C6 tranny behind the 302/289...I would have thought the C4.

I was able to get under the car recently, and it actually is a C4.  The seller probably didn't know what he was talking about.  I figured since the motor was not stock, who knows what trans they had it matched up with.  It's all good though.  I don't plan on pushing too much HP/TQ.  That's what the Turbo Coupe is for. :)

I know they put 'em behind some the 302's in 69' 3/4 ton vans at least.

In the 3/4 ton ford vehicles that makes sense...but for a smaller car....the C4 would be the tranny of choice.  The C4 is plenty strong enough for the XR7.
