Title: Headlight Lense Options
Post by: jdouglas87 on July 28, 2012, 08:05:04 PM
Hey Fellas, Got an 87 Former Turbo Coupe with somewhat opaque lenses.  Did a little research but was looking for the simplest factory-looking lens upgrade choices.  Didn't want to mess with the wiring since the interior is pretty factory fresh.  Pics would be great to aid in the decision.  Thx

Thanks for the links. I was thinking something beyond the factory replacements.  The ones I have are factory replacements and they only lasted a few years under semi-protected conditions.  Thought you guys might have come across some OEM looking clear lense replacements/retro fits.

Only '87/'88 Thunderbird headlights fit Thunderbirds. Nothing else swaps over.

Same here. How much trouble would it be to make a set for a Mountaineer/Explorer, as well?

Sure thing. For the Explorer, as long as it has clear lenses it is very doable. Even if it doesn't have clear lenses from factory I would bet there is aftermarket lights available with clear lenses.

Not like that, no.  It can be done with a lot of elbow grease and determination, along with sand paper and rubbing compound.  OR, you could start with something like this:  http://www.andysautosport.com/ford/1995_2001_explorer/lights/headlights/spec_d/spcd00010099.html which is perfectly retrofit ready.

No, those will cause massive amounts of glare.

Something like this works very well, notice how the lense is clear with no diffusers/flutes in it.

I may be interested in a pair of these too for an'88 Cougar. Can you PM me pricing details also?

I'm sure that it would be doable for the Cougars too. But I have personally never even seen an 88 Cougar in person, so it would be a first for me.

You know, the cool thing about retrofitting is doing it yourself.  Putting your own unique spin on it.  I think that it's a blessing that there isn't any laughtermarket headlight mods for out cars, anything you can make for yourself is going to be a step up in quality from that junk they ship here from China.  Get X3 to make you some clear lenses, but head over to http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/forum.php for inspiration, then go to http://www.theretrofitsource.com/index.php for parts.  Build something as unique as your Bird/Cat.

I haven't forgotten about this, just haven't been able to take on any extra projects. Hopefully things will calm down in the next week or so, I apologize for the delay.

Would you to either share or sell the directions and part list to make these lights.  They look great.
Thank you,  Reggie-  87 TC -  Gloversville NY.

Here are two threads I made when I put the first set together. All of the information you need to make a set is in these threads.

The project took a big turn in direction from what was originally planned (you will see that as you read the threads) but I think the end product is much better than what it would have been. It is a lot of reading and all the info you need is there. I am willing to make complete sets, but have some other pressing priorities at this moment.
