Title: New 3.7 swap
Post by: SR71blackbird on March 16, 2012, 02:48:15 AM
So im really digging the new mustang 3.7 V6. It sounds sweet and with just and intake, exhaust and tune they get over 300RWHP! I dont like how it sounds without cats but still! I wonder how much a could find one for with the trans.

That is insane power out of a N/A V6. It sounds like a indy car at high revs, I like it.

I have a 3.7 Mustang. While it is fun to drive the 5.0 in the T-bird will whip the hell out of it from a dig. Both weight about the same (3700ish lbs with me in the car). You have to rev the 3.7 over about 3000 rpm to get into the power band. At the end of the quarter the Mustang would probably be pulling on the T-bird (I'll be correcting that soon ;)). 315 rwhp is nice but it only makes about 270 rwtq. You could get the same performance with a built up 5.0......

Plus I'm pretty sure a 3.7+trans is probably going to be pretty expensive. It's not like you can go to the local pick a part and find a 2011 or 2012 Mustang sitting in the yard.

and if you do, they're going to charge you out the a$$ for the trans alone..

in my opinion, it's not worth the time, effort or money.. even if you get lucky and find them used, i guarantee you're looking at spending at least 3k.. 3k in a 302, 351 or even a 2.3T will put together a better performance package than the 3.7 could for the money..

hell, 3k into a 3.8 could probably hit 315rwhp :giggle:

I just find it super impressive and it would be unique! Last time i had my car weight at emission it would just over 3000lbs. So that is 700lbs pounds less! i could probably do alittle more with the power and get 30+ mpg! Id LOVE to see a 302 do that at over 300RWHP! I would be pricey but it is something im not in a hurry for so if i did start collecting part, i could take my time and find them cheaper. So with the sound it makes and the power along with the unique ness. I figure it would be a pretty cool build!

It gets 31mpg on the highway. You're not going to get that in town ;).

But you could do 31 highway with a 302 too, pay much less and throw the extra money into every other part of the car too.

In a couple of years these engines that Ford are producing are going to make great upgrades for us!!!

Ive still never have never heard of a 300RWHP 302 getting 30+mpg on freeway! plus im going for the uniqueness side of things. HP per mpg sounds great to though!

I am pretty sure $4.00 has a lot to with that. It is no fun having an amazing vehicle that gets lousy mpg making it way to expensive to drive on a regular basis! :D

the guys on broncozone were complaining when it was ~$2.25 a gallon, especially the big block guys.. i guess they don't realize, 'big displacement, big fuel bill..' lol

You don't modify a toy/fun car for mileage you do it to go fast. I always hear people complaining "my blah blah only gets 15 mpg" when they only drive it to car shows. Who cares its a fun car. With how little it gets driven you can afford the gas.

If you want good mileage get an economy car (I did). It's really hard to get good mileage with a fast car. The Mustang averages about 23 in a mix of heavy city traffic and highway. The Focus gets about 26 in heavy city traffic and above 30 mpg in the same mix. Yeah its slower but I only have to fill it every two weeks. You can't have your cake and eat it too ;).

oh thank you thank you thank you!!! words spoken from heaven!

of course, i usually get the counter statement of 'well i can't afford another car'.. to which i say 'than you shouldn't be modifying the 1 you have now..' some people are just super thick headed, though..

I like the newer engines.  They're just not within most hot rodder's budgets right now.

Give it a year or 2....
On a related note, isn't the same transmission mated to the new 5.0?  I'm sure you could find one on the cheap on Modular Fords or S197forum if that's the case.  You can find low mileage 5r55s transmissions for a 4.6 for around $300 bucks.  Put in a hardened input shaft and a converter and those are good to 700 HP with a trans cooler.  It's been done a few times.

I am def not a fan of how the 3.8s sound. The 3.7 can be made fast and get good gas mileage while doing so Thunderjet302. Id bet Horsepower per miles a gallon, the new 3.7 would beat a 3.8.  Im already keeping my eyes on the new V6 mustangs in junk yards but right now they are too pricey but thats okay because im a student paying for college. But a can promise you that id be the only turbocoupe with a 3.7 and that would be pretty cool. Atleast in my eyes.

I was going to say something, but I don't want to offend and we are all freinds here. Hp and mileage go together, to a point. Technology is a good thing.

and i hate waiting.. notice my sig, the front of my car is still on blocks.. lol was waiting to get wheel bearings for the m7 rotors.. but i found a slue of SN95's in a junkyard in MD woooo

plus MS is developing a plug-n-play like stinger's PiMP and i'd go with MS over stinger, as i already have MS2 in 1 of my cars
