Title: What is with all the dumb birds!
Post by: CoogarXR on June 05, 2011, 10:02:20 PM
In my whole driving life, I have hit one bird. This WEEK I have hit 3, and almost hit a 4th. Today, a turtle dove smashed right into my van windshield at highway speed and smashed my wiper apart. Didn't break the glass, but it sounded horrible. The other two were on the street and jumped too late and got bumper blasted.

The 4th was scary, a wild turkey! It jumped out of a tree and swooped over my windshield of my XR-7. I was going 60mph down a rural road on my way to work. That wouldn't have been pretty. Another turkey did the same on my way home to the truck in front of me and it didn't make it... That was a festive poultry explosion.

What's with all the suicidal birds lately? I mean dang, they used to be good at dodging cars...

I was in the same boat last year - had gone most of my life without hitting very many birds (though there was one period in which I hit three crows in three days in my old '85 T-Bird), then last spring I started nailing 'em left and right after I bought the Chrysler 300. With no lies, I washiznitting at least one a day, and there were several days I'd hit two or more. One particular day I hit two on the way to work and three on the way home. This silliness lasted three or four weeks, and it was all manner of birds: Robins, chickadees, a pheasant, a partridge, you name it. Then it just stopped. Haven't hit any yet this year, but it's not for lack of effort on the birds' part - the stupid s are always flying out in front of me....

i dont know how you can get lucky enough to hit a bird with your car, ive been trying to hit birds/squirrles/small children pretty much anything that moves and is infront of my car for years without success.

it must be a sign, go play the lottery or something.

With me I'd imagine miles traveled has a bearing on it. I commute 120 miles a day via back roads, so there are plenty of opportunies for suicidal wildlife. I'm just glad it's all been of the "under 5 pound" variety thus far...

Hahaha, that reminds me of what happened the other day. I was driving along and I see a bird flying low above the ground. By the time I saw it, it wasn't worth slowing down. I drive by without feeling a thing. I take a look in my rear view mirror a second later and I see nothing but a cloud of feathers  It must have gotten sucked under and smacked into the differential housing or something....

Geez how did I miss this thread! I'm pretty sure I mentioned the time a turkey vulture ran into my windshield when I was driving in my cougar at 70mph.... I was just driving along and up ahead I saw a swarm of vultures, probably 6 or 7 and all of them took off and flew the right direction except for one stupid one who waited until I was right there and then flew right in front of the car. All of a sudden it was SMACK and some juice on my windshield and then I looked in the mirror and he fell out of the sky and was doing somersaults. I swear probably the funniest thing I have ever seen in my car. It was like a cartoon. except for the juicy windshield thing. Man the windshield bug wash was working hard that morning.:rollin: didn't crack the windshield though amazingly.

Been a while from last time i hit a birt. I did have a cat run under my cougar once. Luckly I was driving slow and must have just knocket him around a little bit. Not to worry I LOVE cats (I have 4 of them). After hearing the "cathud" I couldn't find him anywhere, so he was a survivor.
