I finally got my stuff in the mail. I wanted two, but,due to the size of the cup holders, I can't fit two of them, and with modern cups the size that they are, I figured one is sufficient. I need it more than anyone in the car. Driving a 5 speed, it's a challenge to hold a drink, and the passenger can hold their own drink. Anyway,I assembled the cup holder and installed it. It's a quick change back to stock with two screws ,as console car owners already know. There's actually still plenty of room in the console, which I never use for anything except a tire gauge anyway. What do you think?

I like it
looks real good Vin.the only thing I am wondering is,dont you kinda have to reach back a bit,to reach the cup?
cool cup holder. My console is always full of spare change. you should see the lincoln's console. must have 80 bucks worth in there. lol
i see someone stuffin an elbow thu their cup on a hard 1-2 shift :hick:
Ummmm, I usually have my arm there............
could double as an elbow holder. :rollin:
My MegaSquirt relay board resides under there. Not the best place for me to put a drink ;)
Well,I tested it with an empty glass, and grabbing the glass was comfortable, and not an issue.Rarely do I need to carry a drink, but when I do,nowhere to put it,so,the new lid.Shifting with a cup there is also not a problem.I like it so far. If I change my mind one day,I'll remove two screws and replace it with the stocker.Easy stuff. It's different, and in my own opinion,it doesn't look out of place or an eyesore.
Jerry, for coins,I always carry a bank bag on the outer side of the driver seat in the floor.Out of the way,and doesn't move.Like you,it has some value in it.LOL.
I usually have my hand resting on the pistol grip shifter or the steering wheel.
Eh, relocate the window, mirror, and seat controls and fabricate a new center console. That's what I'd do anyways...
I don't drive this car while eating/drinking so a cupholder isn't needed - plus I always use things with solid lids and just toss them into the back seat.
Looks functional and I agree it's easy to revert but I'm not fond of the center console in the first place so creating one from scratch would be my ideal situation. I may do that at some point down the road, moving the window controls to the shifter plate and the mirrors to the door, seat controls to the sides of the seats or on the door. Easy to do and can be reliably done with some simple electrical engineering without the need to run additional large-gauge wire everywhere (so you can go back to stock if you'd like too). Oh how I dislike the center console's lack of efficiency. I guess the same can be said about the center dash also...
I like the console as it is for the most part.Just the lack of a cup holder....which,for my Sport,I have figured out for now. I may get tired of it.I may not.Time will tell.I am now on to other projects.... By the end of the month,I hope to have the windows tinted,a/c working, and a plan on getting the sound deadener purchased. After that, recover the seats. After that........well,I can't see that far.
These cars don't have cup holders because you're not suppose to have drinks in the car;)
Did I miss something?
I was let down by the lot of deadener I installed. All my noise comes from the window areas and top of the doors. I could barely perceive a difference and this was with multiple layers of butyl mass loading, plus NBR/PVC barrier sheeting. Removing the stock deadener, I'm sure this stuff would work as well and be much lighter, but I left the stock stuff intact and noticed next to no improvement. I didn't do the roof but I did the sides, floor, and rear deck/behind the rear seat. I had so much deadener on these spots that when trying to reinstall the bottom of my rear seat, I bent the metal and now I can't get it bent back to reinstall properly. I've added like over 1/2 an inch of mass and barrier deadening around the vehicle. Plus it took me like 4 entire days, dawn to dusk, to properly install it all. I did the sides and rear seat area one weekend and posted pictures here but added more later as I figured I didn't do good enough of a job - it didn't improve...Waste of funds on non-go-faster stuff.
Yeah...I can't recommend the stuff unless you're removing all the stock deadening. I'm surprised that even the doors did well with just their factory padding and door panels.
Until I get the a/c finished, driving around with the temps outside at 105 plus means there IS a drink in the car.
Mine has no roof padding, and the replacement carpet wasn't as thick as the stock carpet.I plan on getting new carpet next year. The exhaust is also somewhat loud.It needs help pretty bad in the "quiet" department.
I rest my arm on the console, so this works for me.

Looks very professional.
So is the plan to get the car to be a 10 outta 10 .......... and then leave it in my driveway?
You're already at 9.9 outta 10.
Make her a 10? I wish. I have a long way to go.I just do what I can when I can on limited to no funds. Makes it more challenging that way.LOL. Eventually, and last, new paint....again. I have plans for a new hood and a couple of other minor "adjustments" with the body. That'll be towards the end of 2011 though. Thanks for the compliments,I really appreciate that from my fellow peers here.Good or bad,I like to hear it all.
right hands for shiftn, left hand for drinkin, but it does look good
Thanks a lot.Until I can find a better idea,this is it.,
ive been thinkin of how to do mine, im not sure what im gonna do.
I really dislike cups in the console. My t/a has one in the console, and it's completely in the way. Knocked the lid off of a McDonalds cup, and that was the end up it.
man i wish i knew you were doing this,, i would have suggested you find a kia sportage in the yard.
they have a clever pop out of the dash drink holder that kina pops in and out and operates just like our ash trays. they are very narrow and end up folding up into about 1/2'' of horizontal space approx 6'' deep and bout 7'' wide.
that could be integreated into many spots of our dashes.
i dont like it,, but do like the nice work you did. My elbow would be all up in my drink all the time especially if no lid is on.
I may check into the Sportage idea.Thanks. But for now, this is what I have to use.As I said,I can easily swap the stock lid back on in two minutes and it'll be like it never was there....if I decide to remove it.
Looks good Vinnie, like it could have been factory.
Looks good!
There were many times I wish I had something like that in my 5sp car. Roadtrip, stop for coffee, no where to put it and still need to shift. :hick:
Great idea and it has that factory look!
Open the console and place it in there? It's big enough to hold a large water bottle so if you wedge something in there, a smaller cup would work without a problem. Or just remove the armrest :p
That's what I used to do lol
Well here's mine... I have not taken any pics of it installed yet though... it's still too small for really large cups. The SN-95 Mustang consoles were revised two times during the production run. The first revision replaced the covered ashtray with a cup holder that snap fitted into that area. Then the second revision revised the console to include large molded in cup holders. The early console is too good to waste but I suppose at some point if I wanted to bad enough I could switch to the final revision console.
Hard to find a better solution for floor shifter cars other than what Vinnie came up with.
Here is a solution as well...

I did what I could, with what I had, for uber cheap, and have it come out decent looking and functional (in my own opinion) without making permanant mods to the car and keeping it easy to put back to stock.. I also thought it has a factory-ish look to it. Thanks Kitz for the cap (without Kitz, the Sport would NOT be where it is today).. The console lid was dry and had those fine little cracks all over it......like it had been sun baked for 22 years. Oh,it had been sun baked for 22 years.LOL.
THAT cup holder wouldn't even fit in the Sport.........holy .
So that was your idea, That cap does look like a cushion lid. You know I got that about 6 years ago and never new what it was. Glad you put it to use.
Yep,that's it. I was actually hoping for two holders in the lid, but, the only way to do that was to use two that are made more for cans, which I rarely have,so,one cup console lid.I'm still adapting.I like it,but whether or not it's permanent, time will tell.
I did a search and easily turned up cup holder inserts available that are designed to just drop in a round hole, like for pool tables, RV's and those loungey couches...
I saw those as well. That's what I bought. The one I have was the only one that I saw that was deep enough, and the right diameter to hold a cup that one might get through a drive-up window somewhere..
Buy a small/medium instead of a large? ;)
Hmmm, interesting.
Definitely looks really good vinnie. Far cry from what I was planning...I wasn't sure where you were gonna take this.
That just wouldn't work for me though. My arm is always right there. My 96 had cupholders in the armrest, and I couldn't stand those, so I switched to the in-console ones. That is what I plan on doing to the 88 too.
As long as you are satisfied with it though, and you seem to be, then what could be better:D
Good work
Vinnie you got a hole in your armrest!
I "built" it with the intention of not making any permanent alterations. It works fine, not in the way,and I don't have drinks with me hardly ever. It's a "just in case".
Yep.....a deep black hole of cup holding goodness.LOL.
You could just fill it up and use a straw.. lol
Cool idea. I'll need a long straw though. LOL
This is the best solution to the cup holder issue, ever. That or stick a bladder in the map pocket and snake a straw up and around to face position. You guys know you want to try it!
I found my mobile beverage solution
not a bad 1, cept for the fuzzies on it.
You must be shorter - I'm like at the roof on these things with the seat all the way down and back. A hat won't fit.
I'm only 5'6" ...I have lots of headroom :hick:
Yeah...it's difficult to fit into many vehicles. I can do the fox Tbird comfortably though and people have modified the seat tracks with little issue for more space. If I was heftier, I'd have some serious problems though - trucks are much more roomy.
6' even without shoes on,195 pounds. No hat for me that's any more than a ball cap.
vinnie your cup holder is nicely executed and im impressed at the impeccable condition of your console lid you got it nos?
NOS lid? Cut it up? No way.I'd still have it in the box if it were NOS.It's an older lid that had sun cracking all over it,and a plastic, textured console lid cap I installed.Once it has some armor-all on it,it looks really nice.
6'3". Kinda sux
It does look reallly new in the pic...
It looks really new up close and personal as well.
Do you look like you do in your avatar when driving? That looks about right ;)
I just used vinyl over the shifter and armrest - it was simple and looks as good as anything else. I hate the creaking when I place any weight on the center console though - THAT is what I want to fix. I think the thing just needs to be beefed up to be made more rigid and thick.
heh... yeah, that pic is normal, but if I sit up straight with the seat all the way up or one notch back, (i usually slouch down a little) my head doeshiznit the roof...
One thing I love about our cars though is that my knees don't hit the dash at least! Don't even get me started on my sisters Miata...
Sorry vinnie should we move to "how tall are you">>> thread?:hick:
Nope, no need to swap threads. Feel free to say whatever you want. We're one big jacked up family. LOL
You should make a cover for the cup holder now....
I thought about a cup holder filler cap when it's not being used. I'll see what I come up with......Hmmmmmmmmm, I'm having an idea........
Not a bad thing. Something to make it a little more functional than it already is. I need time to think.........and plan......and gather "stuff".
gather stuff?? You're like a scavenger... a.k.a. a vulture... who somehow manged to scavenge up over 12,000 posts!!!WTFingF
Well, over the years,I've had to make it a habit of looking for parts, and ideas, from some of the least obvious places. Building this Sport has been a huge challenge, but,it's easier now with the practice I've had.At first,I was lost,no idea where to look for parts and such.I have a pretty good handle on it now.Bad part, our supply of factory parts are drying up fast.
