Title: Intake Ideas
Post by: Whiteboy on September 27, 2009, 03:39:09 PM
Ok well i like going into Auto Zone or O'reilly's or even just looking through these forums to find cheap ways to make my car look better. Well an idea came across my mind while in Auto Zone that I could buy one of their red chrome intake pipes, and a cone-looking intake and run it right up next to or in front of the radiator, not only making it look good, but giving it cooler air, right? is there any complications im missing? or is it REALLY that simple to make people freak out when i pop my hood cuz i have chrome parts under the hood. (yes my town really is that small) :dunce:

Any open air filter under the hood will draw in warmer air.The factory air box is already a "cold air induction" (CAI).Leave it alone and just add a K&N filter in the box and remove the air silencer if you haven't already.A really good cleaning and detailing will do wonders.

Lol ok thanks, I did notice that it came in from a colder area. What about the connection piping though? Is it safe to change or just paint it what color I want.

I would just get one either for a mustang, or build one out of PVC. But really, your stock on is fine. I doubt it is going to kill the performance of your engine anymore then the intake or exhaust is.

Get a MAC or BBK CAI kit for speed density.I saw one on four eyed pride or the Corral (I cant remember),still in the box, brand new for $50.00.That's a good deal.Filter, tubing and connectors.

PITA to change the filter when you lower your car though... I have the stock box back in now. Needed a filter and didnt have the money at the time so I threw the old stuff in.

Cant tell you it give you any power, but with a K&N on the end of it I can tell you that it will breath better. Its colder air for sure.

I should have really ducted my foglight opening to the fender. Force a little more fresh air that way.

I like to trade less then 3% improved airflow for 1,000+ times larger particles getting in my engine as well.

how is a cold air intake with a properly cleaned and oiled filter allowing 1000 times larger particles into the engine?

1000 is a bit of an exaggeration. However, the guys in the link below found the K&N let through 18 times more coarse dust.
http://duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm (http://"http://duramax-diesel.com/spicer/index.htm")

The results look pretty ing if you want a low-maintenance filter. One would assume that letting in more dust would also be bad, but that is only speculation - I've never seen any actual durability testing between filters.

Keep in mind these results used a sample of one, which means from a statistics view, the results are worth diddly squat. Also, there are for one kind of filter. Other filters may yield different results.

I also wonder how much paper  is let into the motor when it is placed where it might get wet. Random thought

I've just heard bad things about K&N as a whole. Other then the mustang guys bragging about them, I really don't hear many good things. If the air filter is really holding you back that much at the track I would just pull it off, then put it back on for the drive home. I'm not meaning to dog on anyone in particular, but many people said they didn't gain anything at all using one, and alot of places will void your warrenty for your engine and things like that because they thing they let too much dirt/dust in.

For me, I'll stick with the paper filter.

I switched to a k&n when I had my cougar.......never really noticed a difference in anything at all over a motorcraft filter (or really any other paper filter for that matter). Mine was a bone stock S.O motor with true duals though. I beleive a k&n would do better to compliment other mods than just throwing one in a stock motor and hoping for a little hp gain.

i dont even run a filter.  I figure the fender void is filter enough.

jcassity, are you serious?

the intake on my car was highly rigged when i got it. i had none of the stock parts, so i scrounged around and found a k&n knockoff filter and enough tube/couplers to run it through the fenderwell.

it's not fancy, but it's better than what was on it when i got it. i will be redoing it when i go MAF, but for now it's working

Run a filter. One of the guys in our club took his filter off at the track (just at the track) on his 427 stroker Cobra kit car. He sucked up a pebble and it cost him a block. It got stuck on a piston edge and grooved the cylinder. Run a filter.

Last person I would have expected to say they didnt run a filter.

I have on occasion, but it was more of an accident. I think ill suffer the "power" loss and buy a filter for a couple bucks then gamble with wounding my motor.

I have had a paper filter and a K&N on my GT40 5.0 (running a paper right now) and I have noticed zero difference between the two. Hell the car even trapped the same with either filter :hick:
