Title: Anyone into guns?
Post by: 86XR7project on August 11, 2009, 06:02:02 PM
I just started getting back into the gun world and wondered if there were others on the board who were into them as well. I have a small collection that I am starting to grow :)

Into guns, well ya could say that. I dont have as many as I used to own though. But I still have some pretty neat stuff . Have you ever seen a WWII Soviet Tokarev SVT40? Or, how about a Steyer M95 with puppies markings? I also have a Mosin Nagant that was captured by the Fin's and rebarrelled by Sig. Fewer that 10,000 are known to have been converted. Not sure how many still exist today. I have a few dozen more, just dont wanna bore you with the details.  Guns, cars, SCUBA diving and good cigars... what more does a guy need?

Hell yeah there  COOL! Anyhow My most recent purchase was a 1944 Spanish Mauser in 8x57 or as the receiver says 7.92cal. I've also got a few other rifles and couple of handguns. Nothing like sitting out plinking away. Keeps us on the ready in case we have to hunt or need it for some unfortunate occasion. I haven't had my hands on a Fin Mosin but my buddy has 3 Russian Mosins 2 91/30's and an M44.

I too have a Mosin-Nagant, don't know the specifics..think it's Hungarian.
I've got a WIn. 30-30, a .303 Brit, several old shotguns, a few .22's.

My dad has close to half a dozen .303's, a handful of .45-70 Gov's, some other stuff I can't recall.
I've also got a Taurus .38 Spl...would love to have a Taurus .40

I briefly owned a 9mm semi auto rifle...wasn't anything fancy, just about able to click 7 shots without falling alseep, it was only slightly more worthless than the Chinese SKS I gleefully traded some idiot for my .303 Brit.

When I first shot the 7.62x54, I thought if I ever managed to be able (or crazy) enough to use it for deer, if the ugliness of the rifle didn't kill the deer, then the noise would if the bullet didn't, lol.

I've got a few boxes of shells for it for hunting, but it's hard to leave Reliable (.303) in the house when I go out. I've never killed deer with anything other than the Brit, and a a few vehicles, and once, with a knife. But that's a different story, for a different thread. :D

I actually kind of suprised to hear a few guys on here have Mosins, I actually like em alot. They aren't a bad gun for the money either. I am really into older WWII era rifles/guns.

87DailyDriver- Yes, I have seen an SVT40 I wish I could get one to add to my collection but $2000 is a little out of my range for a rifle.

I have been looking into getting an SVD Dragunov or similar copy of it. (If you can't tell I like eastern front/Russian guns) I really have no interest in getting an AK or SKS though, they just don't do anything for me.

My grandfather is a retired gun dealer, so I've been exposed all my life to sporting arms.  Plus being in the infantry, I was exposed to more firepower than some, but don't own any....though an MP5K would be nice to have.

Anyway, I have a few.

WOW, I never knew the SVT40 was bringing anywhere near the $2000.00 dollar mark. I bought it 15 years ago for next to nothing. I dont remember what I paid for it but I'm cheap, so it couldnt have been much. Maybe I should sell it to pay for some mods on the T'Bird. I can see my Wife rolling her eyes now. As for the Nagants, I love them. Hard to argue with a 7.62X54 round. I have a few 91/30's and an M44. The M44 hurts a little when you shoot it though. But, I'm always amazed at the acuracy of these old rifles. I have some current production stuff also.  However, these old WWII rifles are tough to beat. Heck, some of my stuff pre-dates WWI.

AK 47: Hit the broad side of a barn... while standing in it.
AR 15: Hit the broad side of a barn from across the farm.
Mosin Nagant:  Hit the farm from 2 counties over.

You shoot that gun in pairs.  Once for fun, then again to relocate your shoulder.

Or so I've heard...

I've been told this before but my Saiga AK is a whole different story. Then on that AR that is if it doesn't jam first!  Oh and if the AR is such the awesome gun why after all these years are they making the AR's work like an AK with a gas piston setup?

That's funny as all hell!
In my case, insert SKS, .30-30, and .303 Brit, respectively, lol

I didn't think my 7.62x54 shot any harder than the typical .30-06 or .303 Brit...just me though.
A gun dealer at one time had a Browning .50 caliber rifle....we took it out to his range, I shot it once. I still have a slight limp, I'm now half deaf, and I can scratch my back without moving my arm.

Not really, but that big  kicked harder than anything I've shot before or probably will again. .338 Mag did a number on me too.

If you can handle shooting anything over .50 Cal I am positive you can handle shooting a Mosin Nagant, I have heard the Carbine versions kick a bit harder though. Metal butt pad FTW!

I've never fired a .50 cal before. But I can tell you this, the Steyer M95 literally kicks like a mule. It's an 8X56 round and the rifle is no bigger than an M44. I have only fired mine twice. Seriously, I could only stand to put 2 rounds down range with it. I fired off the first round and saw stars. After the second round I felt like my teeth were loose. So, I cleared the weapon and sat on a bench behind the firing line to clear my head. That was 15 years ago. I havent fired the weapon since. The Nagant's and the Enfield's pack a punch and I have alot of respect for the soldiers who took them into battle. They are some of my favorite rifles. They are acurate, reliable and beautiful in their own way. But, the M95 is ridiculous! If you ever have the oportunity to fire one... dont do it, it hurts.

Ummm you could say that I am into them. LOl

My daddy was a gun smith, I started shooting when I was 5 yrs old. I grew up out in the middle of no where. I hunt and fish and shoot (for fun...nothing more relaxing than target practice for me).

I have a .22 Jennings, a 20 g, a muzzle loader.
My oldest son has a .22 and a 12g.
My younger son has a .22 and wants a 20 g.

My daughters can all shoot, except Keely and we are trying to get her to start learning.

My father in law is an avid hunter and has more guns in his house than I can count.

Oh and if you ask my husband...he'll tell you that I am a better shot than he is, even though he was an expert marksman in the Army. lol
My brother in law found out years ago that I could shoot too... he kind of challenged me (wrong thing to do and my father in law laughed the entire time), to shoot the cherry off his cigarette. I asked if he wanted to hold it in his mouth or sit it down. He chose to put it on a log.
I proceeded to shoot the cherry off it, and my father in law told him to just shut up from then on. LMAO
Oh and my boys can shoot like me... it's like a natural thing to us... I was practically born with a gun in my hand.... and so were they.

I actually almost bought one of these. To be quite honest the most shoulder destroying gun I ever shot was a buddy's muzzleloader or his 12 Ga with his "Special loads". Ever since then most guns don't bother me. I used to have an M1 Carbine (.30 Cal overgrown pistol round) that had some suprising kick to it but I say it was from the heavy bolt.

My buddy was too, one day he invited me out to the range at his base and challenged me to a shoot off. He lost, to add insult to injury they hung a dime at about 50 yds(Esitimate) and I hit that too. His CO asked why I never signed up, I told him I always assumed my heart defect would make me ineligible.

My buddy no longer talks to me after they laughed at him.

Shot a firearm for the first time the other day. Was down visiting my buddy in WV and he took us out to a shooting range and let me try out his saiga 12, it was surprisingly light and didnt kick hard at all. I sucked at shooting pigeons but still had fun unloading three 12ga birdshots in like a second. Some little blonde chick there made me feel like a little sissy mary and the guys she was with let me shoot their 9mm glock. Pretty good time.

Honestly the glock kicked harder than the saiga.

Yes I’m into guns but living here in New York (NYC metro area) I have to keep it to my self. But yea I have a few. People here just don’t understand I have a few friends into it with me the others I feel just need to be educated to enjoy it. I love the range I could shot paper all day, I am also a hunter and enjoy shooting tree stumps upstate. I have plenty of toys in the cabinet.

The Remington needs work however, the trigger seems to be locked in place. That will be worked on today.

My dad likes guns, His collection isnt that big though 'cuz we never have any money to spend towards it. >.<

I'm no gun expert myself so bare with me...
From what i recall he has:
an AR-15 from when he served.
a 9mm that looks like my walther p-23 airsoft.
a couple 22's that my mom and grandma used to carry for protection.
something vintage looking (6 shooter), I forget what he calls it it... might be a colt, but i think its a kit gun.
and his most recent purchase is a Mossberg 16ga, And he just bought a bigger barrel for it.

He keeps looking at .45's lately xD

Since so many of us are into guns I thought I'd throw a few pictures of my two guns up.

First off I tried out my bayonet on my Mosin Nagant and was suprised when it actually went on with no trouble! Normally they either don't go on or when they do they won't come off! This thing is literally 5' long with the bayonet on it!

Next was the Remington 788 my father in law gave me for free because he didn't shoot it for so long the trigger was locked into place. After about an hour of driving pins and the trigger out I got it all fixed! A little oil for the trigger and the gun is basically brand new, this gun has had a total of 60ish rounds through it since the 70's.

You could say I'm into guns. ;)

I just added a new Kimber Custom II to my collection the other day.  If you're into carry (which everybody who legally can should be, IMO), check out http://www.usacarry.com :)

I just recently got done with the polishing job on the Kimber.  It now has a fully mirror polished action, polished feed ramp & tuned trigger.  Shoots like a dream for a mid-level 1911!  I also got a Ruger Mark III Target with all the bells and whistles.  Much cheaper to shoot than anything else, and I like to have at least 1,000 rounds on "standby" for every gun I have.  Right now the corner of my bedroom is stacked waist high with "reserve" ammo in different calibers. :D

The Kimber is going to get a bobtail, Meprolight bar/dot tritium sights, match trigger/sear assembly, and two tone ceramic coat.  It is my main carry weapon that goes everywhere with me, and I mean just about everywhere.  I'm not a violent person but I am always PREPARED! :)

I'm planning to pick up something I can carry (yes, I have a concealed-carry permit). Probably a .38, maybe a small .357. My dad has a dealer's license so I can pick his brain for advice. It will definitely be a revolver, since they're guaranteed not to jam.

Actually, revolvers CAN jam.  The instructor of our CWL class showed us how it happens...  anything that gets lodged in between the cylinder, frame, or crane will cause the entire pistol to lose function.  Whether it be a piece of paper, lint, debris or whatever, it will "jam".  Unless the hammer is already back (yeah right), it ain't firing until you clear it.

As for what I'd carry for a revolver, I currently have a Ruger SP101, GP100, and a J frame S&W .38.  The J frame is the smaller of the bunch, but the SP101 packs a bigger punch and for some reason conceals on me a little more comfortably.  .357 Magnum is the way to go if you're going to carry a snub-nose, because you lose a LOT of velocity with them since they don't have much barrel length to work with.

.38 +P+ out of a snub-nose barrel produces sub-.380 ACP velocities, think about that.  With that kind of punch, you pretty much give up the reason you were carrying the larger revolver to begin with.  Please consider the .357 to be the minimum for a snubby!

As for me, I still carry my SP101 around occasionally (rule #1 of a gunfight) when I can't dress around my other carry stuff.  Otherwise its a large frame auto.  I wasn't comfortable carrying an auto for a long time until I saw how much abuse they can take and got into the gunsmithing aspect of it all.  My mind is much more at ease now that I completely know how most autos operate, and what I can do on my end to monitor/maintain/improve them.

You know for a cheap revolver you can always buy an 1895 Nagant. Not to mention its the only revolver that can actually be used with a silencer. You can pick them up for anywhere around $80-100. They shoot an odd looking 7.62 round and don't kick much more than a .22 pistol.

haha the good ole Nagant pistols..  For an oddball type of weapon, they are fun to shoot.  A good friend of mine collects Nagant-esque stuff.  If you really want a cheap shooter, the Mosin-Nagant in 7.62x54R is super fun as well!  I don't think I would try to defend myself with either of them, but cheap & functional firearms + cheap, widely available milsurp ammo (even now) = lots of fun at the range!

I've got a S&W Model 60 LS on order (yes, I know it's a "ladies' gun", but it should be nice and compact for carrying), but scoring any .357 ammo is proving to be impossible. No one seems to have any. Even .38 seems to be made of unobtainium these days.

That said, I REALLY want one of these:

Hey, start em on a BB gun and then a .22Lr! I started on a .22 single shot bolt action and have kept shooting ever since.

Quietleaf, I really don't think there is anything wrong with that revolver, in fact it more than likely will be a fantastic firearm. I do have a feeling that it will have quite a bit of recoil because of the short barrel but then I haven't shot many handguns :hick:

As for me, I have been enjoying my Mosin Nagant and Remington alot lately. Until that is the other day....I went to the local gas station and noticed there would be a gun auction in the next town over and he had some guns stuff. Yeah, check out what all he has and you'll understand why I wish at this point I got my new job sooner!

I have a Taurus .38 Special, looks very similar to your S&W there..only the grips are different..mine are like a pearl materiel, with some metalwork over it. If my ed digital camera hadn't took a  on me, I'd be glad to show it off for ya, lol.

I don't know a lot about it, but it is fun to fire. :D

Nope...no BB guns... its the real thing or nothing. Kids have a tendency to think BB guns are toys... and in our house, that's not even an option. They have the real thing and are taught how to correctly use them, all the safety rules... everything.

Man, I am jealous of that collection.... however, I wish I had all my dad's guns.... each of us kids got one when he died, some of us got more than one.....some were sold..... he had an extensive collection of all different kinds.  I am guessing at probably 75 or more.

Yes but the 7.62 you'll be avoiding is the 7.62x39 intermediate round, I go for the larger and more potent 7.62x54R :D. When playing in the gun world, bigger is always more fun

Guns...I'm afraid of guns..
I can't stand guns...
Especially 1910 Colt's in 32-20..
or Model 1892's in 32-20..
I stay far away from guns...and ammo too
(http://members.tccoa.com/plankster/ammo1.jpg)
I teach my kids to stay away from guns also, like I would never teach my 115 lb. 16 year old to shoot a full size Glock 21 in .45, no no no, never
(http://members.tccoa.com/plankster/Holly3.jpg)
I could go on, but I'll save the bandwidth for everyone else..

All of mine are hunting.

Marlin 30-30

Remington .22 composite stock w/ scope

Remington 12 ga. semi auto 3 1/2" shells

Along with my Dad,

AK
Marlin .22 rifle stainless
Remington 20 ga pump
Remington 12 ga pump
Remington 12 ga semi 3 1/2 composite stock
9mm rifle, folding stock
I think 1 or 2 more .22, a Russian assault rifle (cant remember anything about it), Marlin .22 Mag pistol, I cant remember what else is in there or models on most of them.

Its been so long since I have had time or money to take them out. I cant even remember the last time I had them out. Ive only taken my .22 out once, my 12 ga twice maybe (other than a couple turkey shoots). Fall used to mean hunting time, trap shooting, sighting in days. Now it just means holiday season, more work.

Well I have been gone for quite some time, I strayed away from cars for quite some time but have been working on a '67 Checker Marathon A-12E for a bit trying to get it sorted away(see pic)
As for my main focus/hobby right now, rifles, I have been working quite a bit. My Mosin project evolved quite a bit and now looks like this...
I also acquired a carbine Mosin Nagant also known as the Chinese Type 53, I redid the wood stock myself.
My last toy is a 1943 Swiss Karabiner 31, nothing quite as sweet as a Swiss straight pull rifle!

Glad to stop by and see how everyone is doing. Take care guys!

This thread rocks. Here are some of mine.
Walther PPQ, .40 S&W, two 12 round mags.
X

The round on the left is a Hornady Critical Defense 175 grain polymer tipped round, the right one is a CorBon Pow'rBall in 135 grain. Again, a self defense round. This round is a little less snappy than the heavier bullets, and has very little to no flash.
X

Despite what is stamped on the slide, it is only imported by S&W, and nothing on or in this gun is made by S&W. Walther and S&W ended their partnership late last year, and Walther is or just did open a new place in Fort Smith Arkansas.
X

According to WaltherForums, the Gen One PPQ, aka the PPQ Classic (which is what mine is) is no longer in production, but the PPQ M2 is, and it's only difference is a push button mag release instead of the "paddle" that's on the bottom of the trigger guard (also ambidextrous, as is the slide stop). I prefer the paddle style, as it's easy to use my trigger finger to eject the empty mag without changing my grip on the gun. I think H&K also have a paddle, trigger guard mag release...

Mods to this fine shooter will be a DPM recoil reduction guide rod, and trijicon sights. I though Mepro would be a good brand, but a lot of guys on the waltherforums have/had issues with the front sight fitting correctly. I want my stuff to be top notch when it comes to safe, reliable shooting and where the bullet goes compared to point of aim.

Another closer shot (pun intended) of the rounds

PPQ's guts. Don't mind the dirty appearance, I shot it today, about 50 rounds, so it does need cleaned now :)
X

Blackhawk holster from wal mart that actually works really well, for something that's less than 20 dollars.

My carry gun, Walther PPS, also .40S&W. Seven round mag. I have 2 seven rounds, and a six round mag for this. Most of the time I carry, it has the 6 round in it, unless I'm wearing a t shirt and a hooded sweater, then I'll use the 7 round, as you can tell in the first pic, it tends to print a little easier due to the longer, pointed mag extension.
For size reference, this is pretty much the same dimensionally as a Glock 27.
X

Fits like a dream. Yes, it looks dirty, but it's actually tiny bits of leather fibers from the custom holster.

This baby don't need no weight watchers!

A top view of the ETW custom holster, showing the slim shady.
X

The numbers don't lie. With holster.
This and the next pic are measured at the widest part, the slide stop lever.
X

without holster.
X

By the way, in these shots of the PPS, the mag is empty, and the chamber is also empty. I don't like to dry fire my guns anymore than I have to, that is why the red dot on the back (ready to fire indicator) is visible. I repeat, there are NO rounds IN the gun OR mag in these photos!! :)

From the top:
Pre '64 Model 94 Winchester .30-30
1917 Enfield .303 British
2005 or '06 Winchester Model 70 Black Shadow .30-06
late '20s Model 12 WInchester 12GA pump.
X

Another view.
X

Taurus Model 80 .38spl. In either this thread, or the other, a fella posted a pic of his S&W Model 10....this looks a lot like that, only a longer barrel. Also, the grips are not stock...I've looked at thousands of google images of Model 80 wheelguns, never saw another with grips like these.

Later this year, I think I will take the .303 down and give it a thorough cleaning since it's now "retired" from active duty. I won't refinish the stock or blue the barrel, just a deep clean and oil it up. It's a veteran. No need for bling, it would just ruin it, IMO. I've even thought about an aftermarket stock, and keeping the original somewhere safe, if I ever wanted to put it back to the way it was.
My dad has a couple with all the furniture...takes a better man than me to pack on of those monster around all day.
