Title: People suck...
Post by: 20thanniver-ls on April 29, 2009, 08:14:51 PM
So I thought I finally had a Cougar. It was an '85 with a 302, blue on blue, No rot, 143xxx miles. Called the lady and her husband to try to make a deal because I only had half of what they were asking (800) and we had agreed upon me giving them 400 and then two payments of 200 for 2 months. Went to look at it, all was good. Cool - thought I was in like flynn. Call today to see when I could come back to give the money and sign the title and whatnot, and his wife says "Well Sam now wants 500 cash with 150 a month payments." WTF!! We already had an agreement, and now that I'm ready to give them cash they want more! What douche bags. It was a good one too, wish I had the whole 800, but  I hate when someone changes their minds. Anyway, no imprtant point to this thread, just that some people really lick big ones.

Correct me if i'm wrong but is the price not still 800.00????
Sounds like he just wants an extra 100.00 up front, what's the problem????

The problem is that we had already worked out a deal, both agreed upon with a handshake. I can understand wanting a little more money, but why not say it beforehand?

Sounds like he just wants another 100 up front, in case you stiff him on the two payments.

Still 800 though?

Yeah, i see your dillemma, yes he changed a deal, and yes youre not happy, but everyone does these things for a reason,.. maybe they have been late on mortgage, so they are selling the cat cheap to get out of a jam, and th only way to do that is to make an extra 500bucks this month....... i guess im sayin you dont know others situation, yes, it sucks for you,... but it could suck just as much, for them,....... idk....... i know if i bought a new car today, itd hurt selling it for $800, especially if i had no choice???,..... idk, maybe try explaining your situation to them,  and theyll go back on the original deal....

Dont let your pride get in the way of a sale.

So go rake a few lawns or something and come up with the extra 100 bucks, or find a way to come up with the 800. Shouldn't be hard to come up with that. If you want it bad enough go door to door asking for empty bottles or small jobs. Maybe borrow some money and come to them with 700 and offer them that as a done deal.

No matter what you do, get whatever you work out with them ON PAPER. I hate these hand shake "deals" that all too often fall through somehow or somebody gets screwed and ends up crying about it on the internet.

If its what you want you do what you have to to make it work. Serious dude, drop the pride and do it!

They are doing you a favor anyways by letting you make payment. After everything I went though welling cars I now only accept cash in hand at once.

I do agree that it is BS to go back on an agreement though. $100 isnt too hard to come by if you work your ass off fast enough.

I'd agree to it. If I had to sell my pride and joy for as little as $800, it would be $800 or nothing. He's being more than reasonable to let it go for partial payment and signing over the title in the mean time. This is one of those "pick your battles" moments. ;)

Well pride and them bieng reasonable has nothing to do with it. I fully understand their situation on wanting more money, yes, it is a possibility that they could be stiffed, and I am not saying they are bad people or trying to badmouth them or anything, I just hate the fact that they went back on what they said. It is really great of them to try to make something work in the first place, as many people wouldn't. Reflecting back on the situation (when I first started the thread) I was more mad at the fact that I let myself get my hopes up before having anything concrete, and maybe took it out on them by calling them douche bags. 100 bucks is hard to come by for me right now, hell getting the 400 was hard enough - and everyone I know is just as broke and have kids and a wife and a house to take care of too so no borrowing there. It really is a nice cat for 800, well worth the money. I wasn't nasty to them either, just told them I couldn't come up with all the money right now......well anyway, I wish someone could save it, or it would be another fox lost to someone who wouldn't appreciate it....

Yeah...If 100 bucks is too hard to come up with right now then regardless of how good a deal it was, buying the car wouldn't have been the smart thing to do. Id pass on it.

You are absolutley right. As hard as it was to do it. I can't lie, it would've been a money pit.....

Hey, you never know... maybe that one's not meant to be yours.  What if you'd found the extra money, bought the car and then found out it's gonna need an engine and tranny...?  I guess I'm just saying take it as a sign.  I rushed into buying way too many cars and regretted it later.

I cant believe you guys telling him to drop his pride,,,  Yeah,, like he is the problem.:beatyoass:

Man to Man agreement with a handshake.  The other mother f'er needs to man up and honer the agreement.

oh well,, maybe thats how the world is going,, lets say one thing and do another.  Im not that liberal but rest asure this pride thing you all mention has nothing at all to do with anything.

lets wheel and deal on some parts i have for sale,, then mid stream i will change the terms on any of you,, lets see how long you like it.

I am not like this, a deal is a deal, the hell with pride.  How about a little pride in your word?  oh,,thats right, we dont need none of that old fashion BS anymore do we?:rollin:

So what if he cant come up with another hundered, according to the agreement, he didnt have to.  they didnt have to agree to the terms but they did.

everyting is upside down and inside out nowadays,, shesh.  none of you would have been talking like this a couple years ago,, whats with all the empathy with the bad guy>?

Id say check it out in a week or so,...... and they might just go down on the price, or go with the original deal....... its not like EVERYONE is willing to pay 800 bucks for a 20 year old mercury cougar... but then again.. fist time drivers  and things like that i guess...

But what you need to realize is he is 20 yrs old, and people get nervous about having payments from someone so young. Lets be honest here, young people are hard to trust.

Agreed. The issue is, Now a days without anything on paper you are setting yourself up to get screwed. Gone are the days of trust and honesty. Pride? Honor.....? Gone.

Either take the deal (pay in full and be done with these questionable people) or tell them to stuff their re-neg. Its that easy.

They agreed to the "deal" in the first place. Nothing to realize. As adults they ought to be able to make a deal and man up to it.

I dont know if you know this.... but im 20, and obviously if someone my age was to buy a car, and the seller didnt want to take risk.... paper documentation, would be fine,,, but id also agree on them keeping the title/ or car until i payed up.....(assuming we have the deal out on paper, and everyhing was clear and understood......

Holding on to the title was part of the deal, I'm over it though, I would rather have an 87-88 anyway;)

I kinda miss it. Been out here in the "country" for a few years now, probably too long.
