What kind of Hpipe is everyone using on their 1987-1988 5.0 Thunderbird or Cougar? Any problems with fitment?
stock fox mustang 2 1/4 with punched cats...fit better than the y pipe did...
Bassani 2 1/2" stainless X pipe without cats. Had to put 2 small dimples in the left pipe to clear the shift linkage on the tranny. 3 tenths in the quarter with only that change. Really uncorks the system!!
I've used both bassani x and mac h-pipes. I personally will never buy anytyhing else mac, they are garbage in my opinion, the bassani is great, bolted right up on mine, never tried it with an automatic yet though.
I'm using and off-road 2.5" Mac H-pipe and I like it. It fit perfectly with the Mustang headers.
Everything is custom on my T bird.
2 1/2 from the mack headers to 2 1/2 hiflow cats with flowmasters and 2 1/2 manderl over the rear end and 3 inch out the back.
I have BBK equal length shortie headers to the jegs brand 2 1/2" h pipe, and i might add that nether the headers or h-pipe were at all easy to install. The sound i get through them and single chamber lers is quite nice however.....
My H-Pipe came from a Mark VII.I hollowed out the cats and off I went.
I tried a Pacesetter offroad Hpipe and had problems getting both sides in the hanger under transmission mount, shifter linkage on drivers side of transmission and rubbed against passenger side of the transmission. I didn't want to tamper with it to make it fit and not be able to send it back to Summit. I figure I would get it together and have nothing but noise going over bumps from rubbing everything!
I have a brand new Mustang factory 4 cat pipe, but I do not have emmissions on my car anymore. How hard to make those fit in our cars? I read that the tv cable might get caught on drivers top converter shield. I don't know if I want to go through the process of gutting it out. I would like to sell it.
If I am correct the Mark VII H and the Mustang H are the same. I have a gutted Mustang H on my car now. I have had a Mustang off road H on it and I have another H with complete cats laying around.
I have not had any problems with any of them. I even had an exhaust shop put a Mustang 5.0 H pipe on my 3.8 bird. I did have problems with the Mustang H that is currently on the car not wanting to line up with the headers. I messed aroung lineing them up for about 3 hour before they fell into place.
The most noise I have in my exhaust is with the lers the hit the bottom of the car when I hit pot holes, and anyone that has been to Illinois knows we have alot of those.
Witebeastxr7 if you are interested you can have my spare H pipe from the Mark VII it is just collecting dust.
Not quite, the Mark VII is longer to compensate for the longer wheel base than the mustang.
Well I stand corrected. I thought they were the same.
I had to have the intermetiat pipe shotened but I thought that was becasue I went from and off road H to the converter H.
thanks slamedcat, maybe you can give me some pointers of installing one. If you have any time this weekend maybe stop by and I will show whats going on with the car( kinked fuel return line) and all. Thanks

Has anyone installed an emissions-legal (cats) X or H pipe up to factory Mustang headers on thier AOD floor-shift 5.0?
I want the cats but these online places use generic photos and I can't tell if the cats on some of these (like BBK for instance (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&autofilter=1&part=BBK%2D1521&N=400456+4294923429+4294921571+4294908331+4294925005+4294902386&autoview=sku)) will be in the way of the shifter linkage.
Right now, I have stock 5.0 SO, floor shift AOD, Mustang factory headers and h-pipe, flowmaster lers and I really like the low soft tone. I don't want loud, that's for sure. So if anyone knows an aftermarket h or x-pipe with cats that doesn't collide with the shift lever and improves flow without deviating too much from stock h-pipe noise levels, let me know. I can't imagine that a Ford replacement is my only option.
here emmisons legal is only what came on the car origonally. They told me that my 87 v-6 car failed the visual because I only had one tail pipe. There records showed all 87 and 88's have duels.
Carl, that BBK pipe should be alright. It looks like the cats are a little further toward the front of the car, which should mean better clearance around the shift linkage on the side of the AOD. I had eyeballed that same pipe setup until I realized the convertible would never be emissions tested. Went with a BBK off-road X-pipe instead.
At present I have a 2 1/2" Hooker off road H-pipe, fit is so so(right o2 sensor hit the bellhousing, had to grind out a demple). Also had to cut the lower ear off the shifter cable bracket so it didn't rub on the left pipe(I believe this is a issue on most 2 1/2 installs).
Before the day is out, it should have a BBK off road X pipe in place of the Hooker.
I'm using a MAC 2 1/2" catalytic H-pipe. It was a major bitch to fit. My cat-back system was made to fit the factory Mustang H-pipe so I had to loosen the ler hangers and move the tail pipes around a bit. Also the AOD shift linkage would not allow the drivers side to line up with the header at all. It was about 1/2" off. I had to re-drill the cable bracket and relocate it higher on the transmission. Everything ended up working out ok but it was about an 8 hour install/struggle. Probably the most difficult thing I've installed on my car besides replacing the AOD. I dread the day I have to take that thing off again!
Performance wise I have no complaints with the MAC but as for fitment... Egad!!!!
BBK off road H-pipe, no fitment problems. Had a Bassani x-pipe on my old 86, no problems there either.:D
Yea thats what I always thought till today
.............50"......LSC....50" ....... .........52.5"...Hooker....50.3".. ......51"......... BBK........49"......

Apparently the aftermarket shiznit is all over the place. I tried to install the BBK in place of the Hooker, and its 1.5" or so too short... WTF??? Also it was all over the stock floor shifter linkage, the pipe is actually to far inward(take a good look at the BBK and the Hooker)...
yeah the mark and the mustang are about the same.......except the mark h-pipe is longer....
ill give slamedcat a good buyer-seller relationship point...... i bought one of his extra mark h-pipes........and i had it in a couple days after he got the money it bolted right up, awesome person to work with
I have an 88 Sport, still has original or original type exhaust setup. I want to go to a cat-less H pipe, w/Flowmasters. I have Mustang Headers to put on. All I want is a nicer sound. I have no plans to do anything to the engine, other than maybe replacing the stock Air Filter with a Cone and cold air setup.
My question/concern? Am I going to run into performance problems after the exhaust upgrade if I don't make any changes to the engine? I had an exhaust Mech try to tell me it would screw it up. My buddy who I will be working on this with has an 89 Mustang with the setup I want to go to, he has EFI, and he said all he had to do was tinker with the timing.
This car is my only car + is a daily driver. I can't afford a lot of problems if I can avoid them. I've had it 3 Yr4 Mo. It has 175,000 miles and runs great.
