Hey all...
I'm trying to install some new 6x8" speakers in the rear deck of my '87 Merc. Cougar.
My problem is that the rubber straps that came stock are too small and won't fit over the speakers...I can't figure out another way to mount them with the hardware that came with them...
Anybody out there have any suggestions where I can get either bigger mounting straps or advice on how I can mount them? Thanks!! :toilet:
Pull the rear side panels out inside the car (not trunk), then pull up the rear deck carpet on each side. You'll have enough room to put the speakers in and bolts to hold them in place.
Hmmm...so you're saying do it from the top down? I was trying to avoid work! :yuck: I'll check it out, hopefully it won't be that difficult... thanks for your help!

It's a matter of a few screws on the side panels to get them out, then depending on how much the tweeter of the speaker sticks up, you can mount it from the top or the bottom. Oh, i think the seat belt retaining bolt has to be removed too, it's a t40 torx bit to get at it. It's not terribly hard, just slightly time consuming. It helps to have a friend around to help with the speaker mounting part too btw.
I just stretched the straps over the magnets of my Pioneer 3-way 6X8's. It took some work, but they went on, and have been on through three installs (88 Cougar, 87 T-Bird, 88 T-Bird). Here it is in the '87 Bird:

Same here on 2 different sets of speakers.
The LSC Lincolns used 6x9 speakers, and have a larger rubber band that works with taller aftermarket units...
Geez. How does one acquire so much knowledge?? Seriously Tom you are like a Fox chassis encyclopedia.
'cuz he's got eighty-three Turbocoupes in his driveway at this very moment
Yup I just streched the rubber thing over the new speakers as well.
find woman willing to put foot in small of your back and reach around your waist to stretch rubber around oversize unit
Well I got it... What I did was put the stock straps across a vice and opened the vice all the way up and left them to stretch over the weekend -- popped 'em off, and STILL had to stretch them a bit to get them over the magnet.
I'd put up a pic, but I'm waiting to win the digital camera bid on ebay, so oh well :)
Thanks for the help & advice all! :flame:
Uhhh.... maybe cause I owned(parted) a LSC???
