so i had the rear axle up in the air so i could diagnose a vibration i have at higher speeds..... got it up to 70 or so and noticed the rear wheels wobbling.... so i stopped and checked the wheels and found that the clunked in and out of the axle shaft a good bit..... i know it should have a little play, but i think mine might go in and out about 1/4 or 1/8 inch or so.... i made a video of it to show... i hope you can see it.... does that look normal or is my rear end going?
my build sheet says i have a "non-locking rear axle" if that makes a difference
thanks

no, not normal.
remove your rear diff cover then your wheel / drum.
have someone move the axle in and out while you inspect inside the diff.
Hmmm, I have seen the hole that the center pin goes into wear out, allowing it to move side to side too much. You should be able to find out what's going on once you get the cover off. Where in FL are you?
st augustine... i talked to someone at work today and he thought it was normal..... i know they are supposed to thunk a little, i just thought mine might be too much.... there isn't any up/down or side to side play in it, and the backlash seems to be right.... maybe never having it like that and noticing before it was always like that, but i guess when i get a chance, i'll bust the cover and take a look.... i've had the car for 14,000 miles and there's no telling if the fluid has ever been changed anyway..... i just HATE that smell:fart:
"Some" side to side is ok, but without putting my hands on it, and just looking at the video, it looks to be a little much.
From the 84 shop manual:
Under troubleshooting "knocks".
Knock is also characteristic of excessive end play in the axle shafts. Up to 0.030 inch is allowed in most axles.
NOTE: Be sure to measure the end play with a dial indicator. not by feel. A guess usually feels like more end play than there actually is.
On the intergral axle, end play is allowable up to .025 inch but can be reduced to .005 inch. It is controlled by the C-washer that holds the shaft in the pocket of the side gear.
To reduce the clearance, cut a shim in the pattern of the C-washer and install it behind the washer. Do not reduce the end play to less than .005 inch.
Nice shoes. ;)
better to wear avia's than fila's :slap:
thanks for the specs.... i'll get one at work and give it a check.......
