Title: It has begun.....UPDATE..
Post by: vinnietbird on February 03, 2008, 07:27:41 PM
I'm installing the E303 and new heads tomorrow,I started this evening by pulling the fan, upper intake, valve covers, rockers, and harness from the engine.Tomorrow morning, the rest will come off and the new parts go on.I'll grab a couple of in progress pics in the a.m. Wish me luck.

:burnout: .........................TRUE DAT !!!

If I get started around 9:00,I should be finished before lunch.I'll be taking my time and enjoying it all. It's supposed to be around 79 degrees according to our local news.Couldn't ask for a better day.I am a little anxious.I'll try to get a burnout shot if I can get my little man to stand on the curb and shoot the pic.You guys will be the first to know.

O.K.,the E303 and new ported E-7 heads are on and I'm finished.I am having a crazy idle issue, but I'll have that taken care of.I drove the car down the street with the tires blazing. When I stopped,it died.I started the car up again, drove it home, and called a mechanic I know. He's going to come over tonight around 8:00 and check everything and set the timing for me (I STILL haven't bought a new timing light yet). He's going to take care of that in trade for the heads I took off of the Sport.
Now,for those who didn't believe,an E303 and ported E-7 heads DO work with my flat top pistons,no PTV issues. There's the update for now.

HE HE HE,whats up with idle vinney? You may need to boost a little more rpm.I had to do 850.

Post by: vinnietbird on February 05, 2008, 05:41:35 PM
I had thought that, and so did the mechanic that's coming over.No issues other than that.WOO-HOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You didn't make the valves to tight this time did you? That will
make it idle funky.

I don't think that's an issue. The last time, the heads were milled and I didn't take that into consideration,so,when I tightened the rockers, they were pushing the rods to far into the lifter and the lifter couldn't open.I hope it's just an idle issue, meaning, needs more. He's also going to time it for me.Now I have another issue,my differential (locker with 3.55's) is soing the "one wheel peel" now.The left side doesn't bite.Luckily,I bought another one last Friday.I'll get it in eventually. No hurry right now.The bottom line, the cam and heads are in,and the cam did work. Thanks Kitz.

Your rear, you wont till you check it,When you get to the new one you got, put a new clutch kit in it.Took mine apart that I got ,from someone on here,I just replaced stuff that didn't need to be.Got the old stuff if you want it.

If I can use the E-7's and the E303,the 1.7's should be a breeze. It feels good to finally be done with that part of the Sport's build. Now,I can concentrate on getting my a/c pieces (trying to re-install the system from scratch),and the 5 speed swapped.I have the pedals. The tranny and bell housing are in route.I'll buy the clutch, cable, etc. over time.I also need to have the Sport painted as well.Probably before the 5 speed.I'm really getting tired of seeing the red, blue, gold and primer.LOL.

How hard is it to do that?I have NEVER messed with the gears or clutches or any of that.Swapping axles and bearings are about it.

Just don't over rev it and float the valves... I bettin' you'll have pistons kissing valves...

Figure it's going to have to idle at least 800-900 RPMs...

What are you calling "over revving"?I probably won't hardly ever see 4500 or 5000 rpms.90% of the Sports life is just going to work about a mile away, picking up the boy from school and going home.RARELY is there a little "stoplight action".

Hell with the mild cam in mine (@.050 210I/215E, lift .533I/.533E) I have to have it idle at 1050 rpms in park and about 800 rpms in drive when hot or it gets all surgy and stalls when I shift from drive to reverse.

Nice to know its done. Now fix the rear so you can do this :burnout:

I'm going to rebuild the 8.8 I bought last week and install it later on down the road.No hurry right now. It's too cold outside again.Yesterday it was 79 degrees,today,40.Oklahoma weather is crazy.

Let me elaborate.40 degrees, raining, and windy. The temp is the easy part.LOL.I'm not going to complain much, compared to the northern folks,we don't have a winter time.

On another note, the car is now idling well. The cam has a slight lope to it.I expected that.Kitz warned me.Really good power .I could really feel the difference with the E303 and the heads. Now,I can concentrate on some much needed paint prep. It's nice to have this finished.I drove the car a short while ago,and it easily breaks the tires loose and has the car going down the street a little sideways.A little squirrely,I love it.Decent idle, about 850 right now.I'm pretty happy.

I'm surprised you haven't come across a set of explorer heads for your car.  I picked a set up last fall.

Post by: vinnietbird on February 06, 2008, 09:13:57 AM
I did have a set.I was told that they wouldn't work with my flat top pistons. So,I sold them on Ebay. That was then, this is now.I may try a pair when I find a set.If an Explorer comes in aat my favorite yard,he said he'd sell me the pair for $150.00.I'll pay that.I'm pretty happy with the engine right now. It's running really strong and feeling good.

I must be doing something wrong.....Idle is 900 in park 750 in drive:hick:

You'll most likely have to bump yours up a bit with the E cam, Vin....

Mine is about 900 rpms in park.It has a little "rumpity, rumpity" lope to it,yet maintains a good idle.I'm going to try and have a burnout shot today.I have to find someone to grab a pic for me.
